Winnipeg hits -40C mark..

.WINNIPEG AIRPORT REGISTERS FIRST MINUS 40C READING IN 3 YEARS..

CLEAR SKIES AND LIGHT WINDS ALLOWED TEMPERATURES TO DROP TO THE
MINUS 40C MARK AT THE WINNIPEG AIRPORT EARLY THIS MORNING WITH A
LOW OF -41.7C. THIS MARKS THE FIRST -40C READING IN WINNIPEG
SINCE JANUARY 30 2004 WHEN A LOW OF -41.0C WAS RECORDED. THE
-41.7C READING THIS MORNING HOWEVER DID NOT SET A RECORD LOW FOR
TODAYS DATE WHICH IS -43.3C SET BACK IN 1895.

TEMPERATURES WERE NOT QUITE AS COLD IN THE CITY ITSELF WITH THE FORKS
DOWNTOWN WEATHER STATION RECORDING A LOW OF -33C. OTHER UNOFFICIAL
WEATHER STATIONS IN THE CITY REGISTERED LOWS AROUND -36C EARLY
THIS MORNING. THE WINNIPEG AIRPORT TENDS TO REGISTER COLDER READINGS
IN CLEAR AND COLD AIRMASSES WITH A LIGHT NORTHWEST FLOW.

What a way to start a Monday..

  1. The mild, beautiful pattern of December/ early January appeears to have been a cruel hoax by Mother Nature :-(

It is hard to believe how such a violent oscillation in the synoptic weather pattern has occurred.

The flow is essentially coming from the north pole...and the models bring down some more inhumane cold by the weekend.

On the flip side of "the arctic vortex" Iqualuit is now a balmy -4 after enduring sustained winds of 120 kmh!! Hopefully there was not widespread damage or injuries. Wow..what is going on?

  2. Yep, we've been spoiled.. it's come to the point now that we start whining with any cold snap that lasts more than a couple of days (myself included!). But this is Winterpeg after all, and we get cold snaps.. just look at Jan-Feb 1996, or Feb 1966, or Jan-Feb 1936 (hmmm.. see a pattern there??)

I'll just be glad when we get back into the minus teens again. We've been below -20 since Feb 2nd, and it doesn't look like we'll be above -20 right through the upcoming weekend (I see the forcast is calling for highs of -17 on Thur Fri and Sat, but I have my doubts we'll get that "warm")

Stay warm! Spring is just 6 weeks away!
