Another Arctic blast by late week

Temperatures will remain seasonably cold for the next few days over Southern MB with highs generally in the minus teens and lows in the minus 20s. Long range guidance however is indicating another shot of very cold Arctic air that is expected to flood into the Prairies by Thursday or Friday (Feb 1-2) that will bring daytime highs in the minus 20s and lows in the minus 30s along with dangerous wind chill values in the minus 40s. The bitter cold is expected to persist through next weekend into early next week after which a moderating trend is expected.

  1. Wow...this weekend looks extremely cold. Strong winds and the coldest airmass of the season will make for a brutal combination. The "polar vortex" and coldest air will be overhead by late Friday and Saturday. While a surface ridge seems to very slowly build in by Monday.

Under the ridge the winds will die down but the bottom will fall out of the temperatures. Given the deep snowcover, could morning lows reach -40 C at the airport? Probably Gimli and Pinawa will drop into the low minus forties.

As the ridge slips southeast ... there appears to be brief moderation before another lobe of arctic air rotates thru?! ... yikes...what happened to the nice pacific flow we had all of December!

  2. Yeah, it's looking pretty ugly for the next couple of weeks. Guidance indicating no real warm up through mid February.. I guess it's payback time for those 5 straight weeks of above normal temps back in December-January.

By the way, CPC still indicating above normal temps for February in their latest 30 day outlook for the Prairies, while EC is forecasting below normal. There's going to have to be a major pattern flip by mid February for CPC to be right! Here's hoping!
