Nice week ahead.. Major cool down next week?

It should be a fairly nice week ahead across southern MB with generally near normal temperatures much of the week. There will be a band of rain moving across the Red River valley Tuesday night into Wednesday morning (perhaps 5 mm or so), but the rest of the week looks dry and seasonably mild with highs in the 10-13C by Friday or Saturday.  Unfortunately long range models are showing a significant outbreak of cold weather by Sunday the 26th which will likely result in below normal temperatures for the last week of October. In fact, if the models are right, the airmass will be cold enough for the first snowflurries of the year across much of southern MB, with the potential for snowsqualls off the MB lakes.  So be prepared for a chilly Halloween (yet again!), along with the possibility of some of the white stuff around.

  1. Well according to Environment Canada
Observations this morning at 7:00 AM
we had the first "SNOWFLAKE" of the season!
It must have just been ONE snowflake because I sure did not see anything!
    Anyone see anything?

  2. I didn't see anything either.. but according to radar there was a minor "blip" that passed over the airport around that time with some off lake cloud. I guess it produced some very brief snowflurries.

  4. Models coming in line showing strong push of much colder air into southern MB by Saturday evening. Strong northwest winds to 70 km/h or higher Saturday night into Sunday will drive coldest air of the season so far into southern MB with highs likely struggling to get much above 2 or 3C Sunday, with windchills in the -5 to -10 range. In addition those cold northwest winds may produce some bands of lake effect snow to the southeast of Lakes Manitoba and Winnipeg Saturday night into Sunday with some shoreline erosion possible on the east shores of the lakes thanks to potential of 35-45 kt gales. Models hinting at brief moderation next Tuesday before another reinforcing shot of cold air moves in for mid week into next weekend. Get the cold weather gear ready!

  5. Ouch! I guess it's time to put away the hose. I can't count the number of times it has spent the winter under the snow.
