Cold.. and staying cold..

The weather looks cold for the next couple of weeks at least as a large Arctic airmass spreads over the Prairies. For this week, the cold weather will be briefly moderated somewhat by occasional weak Alberta clipper systems tracking across the southern Prairies from the west. Across southern MB, one of these clipper systems is forecast to track through on Wednesday followed by another one on Friday. Each of these systems will spread cloud and some snow to southern MB bringing about 2-5 cm with each system. Still, these minor amounts in combination with the cold temperatures will make for icy road conditions through the upcoming week. Behind these systems will be a reinforcement of Arctic air into southern MB, especially over the weekend into next week with daily highs in the minus 20s and lows in the minus 30s.

  1. I'm a little concerned about the system for Friday!
Unless things change the system on Friday looks like it will be packing some strong winds with it and with all this fresh snow on the ground things could get a little dicey in Southern Manitoba....we will see!!!

  2. Yeah.. it's still 4 days away, and models often have problems with the timing and intensity of these clipper systems (for example, the GLB was off a full day on Sunday's system) But if Friday's clipper remains as forecast, there could be some problems with gusty winds and blowing snow in the Red River valley Friday night into Saturday.

  3. Urban heat island doing it's thing today. While temperatures at the airport are stuck at -18C at 1 pm.. it's at least 3-5C warmer at downtown sites. With no wind and sunshine, it actually feels pretty nice out there! (Too bad they keep mentioning windchill today.. it's not a factor)

  6. Looking at EC Radar at 11:30pm it looks like a lot of the snow fall is going to slide south of Winnipeg. I hope it pushes a little west and gives us a direct hit.

  7. There is talk about a potential storm for this weekend with heavy snow, strong winds and falling temperatures.
According to the models someone would be getting walloped with a icy blast!!

  10. I got 5cm in Steinbach. 3.6mm liquid equivalent. I turned my gauge on after it had already been snowing for awhile. I think the gradual heat prevented as much from evaporating, so more was actually recorded.

I see the potential for a major storm this weekend. Just looking at the models it appears the who thing would just be one giant blizzard. Perhaps 10cm of snow, with North to North-West winds of 40 to 50km/h gusting to 60 or 70km/h. This could paralyze Manitoba from Sunday morning until Monday. Then frigid temperatures would come in for the remainder of the week. Looks exciting weather-wise, but will make for very dangerous conditions.

  11. Scott.. that weekend system is looking downright scary, especially Sunday. Blizzard conditions certainly possible especially through the Red River valley with a fresh snowfall, strong northerly winds, and bitterly cold temperatures. A new blog entry on that system is on the way..
