Southern MB dodges blizzard.. but not bitter cold

A strong winter storm system passing through the northern Plains has spared much of southern MB from significant snow or blizzard conditions, but not from bitter cold temperatures and extreme windchills. The storm, centered over southern Minnesota this morning, has brought snow and blizzard conditions to much of North and South Dakota overnight which will continue into today. Areas of southern MB near the ND/MN border from Emerson to Sprague will still see some snow with this system today (perhaps 2-4 cm), with locally poor visibilties in blowing and drifting snow especially in the southern Red River valley, but blizzard conditions are expected to remain south of the border.

The main story over the next few days will be the bitter cold, with strong winds today producing extreme windchills of -40 to -45. At these values, frostbite is possible within 10 minutes. Winds will ease somewhat Monday and Tuesday, but with bitter cold temperatures continuing (-25 to -35C), wind chills will be an issue through much of the week.

  1. It's this kind of weather that really makes you wonder how one ever decided that this would be a good place to live. Can you imagine the early settlers making it through a system like this. Amazing everyone didn't get on the train and go south.

The winds right now on the north side of the city are absolutely crazy. When will the gusts start to dimminsh?

  2. Yes cold weather certainly heading to Manitoba. Although airport windchills here in Regina hover at -46 C, even my readings inside the city have peaked at 44.5C and currently hover at around -42 (air temp -30.0 C). http://nwrweather.com/

It is even worse in west central Sask right now as temps are in the mid to upper -30s. -52 C windchill in Meadow Lake Sk.!!! You don't want to convert that one to F.

  3. Rob how much snow do you think Winnipeg will get late this morning into the afternoon

  4. Daryl..

I think early settlers were a lot heartier than us modern folk today.. it seems modern conveniences and luxuries have made us less tolerant to extreme weather than before. But then, a lot more early settlers died due to extreme weather, so we're better prepared for it now. It's just that we're less prepared to put up with it!

Winds will continue to be strong and gusty all day, diminishing somewhat tonight into Monday. Strongest winds will be in the Red River valley, especially towards the US border. North Dakota really getting hammered today with near zero visibilities in Grand Forks. I29 has been shut down from the Canadian border all they way to South Dakota due to the poor conditions.

As for snow, Winnipeg may get a dusting to 1 cm at most this afternoon, with 2-4 cm possible further south and east of us.

  5. Looks like the snow has finally made it into the Winnipeg area.
With the light snow and strong winds the visibilty is getting quite low on the highways!
The wind is so cold that it goes right through the winter parka that I have!
    OUCH!!!

  6. Blizzard has been ongoing in Emerson since 8 a.m. this morning. Other parts of Manitoba dodged the blizzard.

  7. The part that is really scary is the fact that we are getting temperatures like this with strong winds and CLOUDY skies.
I would not want to know how cold we can get if the skies clear and winds abate!!!!!

  8. Thompson has hit their first - 40 C for the year and with a light breeze of 9 km/h the wind chill is - 50C

  9. Banff Alberta was the coldest place I could find this morning with a low of - 42 C!
I was not aware that they could get that cold!
I mean their current dewpoint is -46.6 C so they can even drop lower with a calm wind!

  10. Yep.. that makes Banff the coldest spot on the continent.. even colder than anywhere in the Arctic (it's a balmy -27C in Alert!) That Banff temperature of -41.8C is a new record low for them today.. but still a ways away from their all time low of -51C on January 25 1950.

  11. With the daytime highs so cold (-28C) !
Why are the overnight lows only a few degrees colder @ -32 when the winds will be light, deep snowpack and clear skies!?????

  12. Daniel..

The coldest core of temperatures actually moves out overnight, and our temperatures moderate a bit tonight with a west to southwest flow of 20 km/h. There's also some high level clouds to our northwest which may move in overnight and insulate us somewhat. Those factors should keep our temperature from dropping dramatically tonight, even with our cold readings today.

  13. Models are showing another storm late this week. I don't have much faith in the idea right now, considering what just happened with the last storm. However I will see if the storm reappears in future runs.
