Weather station issues

After 14 years of reliable service, It looks like my trusty Davis Vantage Pro weather station is starting to show its age. I'm experiencing more frequent data transmission problems which means current weather data is not getting uploaded to my website. The issue appears to be a failure with the super-capacitor in the sensor suite (ISS) which helps to power the unit when the solar panel is not operating (nighttime, cloudy skies, weak sun)  As a result, I only get data during bright sunlight hours wen the solar panel is providing power to the unit.  This ISS super-capacitor needs to be replaced (which is a bit of work) or I just might bite the bullet and upgrade to a new weather station altogether (after 14 years, it may be time)  In the meantime, I will try to keep the station running on backup batteries until I figure out what to do with it. If anyone has experience or advice on repairing the super-capacitor on the Davis Vantage Pro ISS, let me know.

  2. Thanks for the plug! I may resurrect it this fall depending on how much spare time I have to invest in maintaining the blog. I'll keep you posted.

  3. Very happy to see you back online! You have been my go-to temperature source for years, since you appear to be the closest broadcasting weather station to Cullen. Would really hate to see you shut down.

  4. Hello Rob,
Looking to purchase a Davis Vantage Vue Pro 2 weather station. Is there a Canadian source dealer to buy from? I live close to Winnipeg. Thoughts?

    1. Glen.. You can try Farmtronics out of Regina. They carry Davis wx stations and ship to Winnipeg for reasonable rates. I just put in an order with them myself for a new VP2 station! Hope that helps..

  5. Two records have been set in Winnipeg during the last week. August 15: new record daily high minimum temperature of 21.2C. August 22: new daily high precipitation record of 38.4 mm.

  6. A couple of more, and very old, records have fallen in Winnipeg in early September. An 1897 record was demolished when, at 21.0C, Winnipeg broke its daily high minimum temperature record for that day by at least two degrees. In addition, Winnipeg broke its daily rainfall record on September 4 when 41.1 mm fell at the airport. The original record of 36.8 mm was set all the way back in 1872, the year in which weather records in Winnipeg started being documented!

  7. Woodside radar continues to act up but is likely meeting EC's low reliability expectations which are set at 95% uptime. The have subbed a composite image from three adjacent sites but unfortunately this does not include Winnipeg.
