Today's already one for the record books.. with Winnipeg airport's 28.6C as of 1 pm surpassing the record high for Oct 5th of 28.3C set back in 1943. The question now is.. could Winnipeg set an all time high temperature today for any day in October, which currently stands at 30.5C on Oct 1 1992? The potential is there.. with a few more hours of heating left this afternoon along with gusty south to southeast winds tapping warm air to the south, lots of sunshine, and low humidity. Since 1872, Winnipeg has hit the 30C mark in October on only 3 occasions.. Oct 1 1992 (30.5C), Oct 1 1922 (30.0C) and Oct 6 1879 (30.0C) The way things are going, today will be another to add to the list. One for the record books!
3 pm update: It's official! Winnipeg records hottest October day ever with a temperature of 30.8C as of 3 pm today. (Final reading 31.1C) Previous warmest October day was Oct 1 1992 at 30.5C. Records go back to 1872. Temperature may still climb a bit for the final reading today. Temperature at my Rob's Obs site hit 31.7C at 3:39 pm (see temperature graph left).
The record day today was accompanied by gusty southerly winds up to 60 km/h, tapping 925 mb temperatures of 25C (see 19Z 925 mb plot) This, along with plenty of sunshine and low humidity, resulted in surface temperatures of 30-33C across the Red River valley. Manitoba and Canadian hot spot today was Portage La Prairie at 32.8C. See Free Press article on record setting day.
I cannot beleive we are at 31C now. This is unbelievable, we broke our record of 28C!ReplyDelete
Gotta give credit to the NAM and RUC.. they called it for today.ReplyDelete
BTW, Portage just jumped to 33C as of 3 pm! Winds gusting to 71 km/h, dewpoint down to 5C, RH at a bone dry 17%.
Latest satellite imagery shows a couple of smoke plumes over SE MB from a fire east of southern RRV, and over northern Minnesota just south of the MB border.ReplyDelete
Today's records over southern manitoba.ReplyDelete

THE 31.1 DEGREES RECORDED IN WINNIPEG TODAY SETS A NEW RECORD FOR THE HOTTEST DAY EVER RECORDED IN WINNIPEG IN OCTOBER. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 30.5 DEGREES SET ON OCTOBER 1, 1992.
Well I just got home from work and my jaw just hit the floor. 31.1 C in Winnipeg. Truly remarkable.ReplyDelete
Portage at 33 C. You have got to be kidding me.
Never say never...but I have a feeling I will never witness this again in October!
Summerlike evening with a balmy breeze keeping temperatures in the mid 20s. After a record breaking day, we may have a record breaking night.. RUC gives a low temperature 18C for Winnipeg overnight which would be the warmest overnight low ever in October (currently 17.2C in 1897).ReplyDelete
Rob...with the dewpoint so low why does the airmass not cool quickly after the sun has set??? Is it just the wind that will prevent the temp fall???ReplyDelete
Yes.. as long as the wind is up, it will keep the temperature from falling as quickly since it keeps the low levels mixed. Usually, winds will drop off after sunset which allows the surface temperature to drop, but if the pressure gradient is tight enough, it can keep the winds up much of the night. That will be the key as to whether or not we break that overnight low record.ReplyDelete
October 5th @9:00 p.m and it is still 26 C out there!ReplyDelete
Ahhhh.....excuse me, could someone go to the airport and make sure the therometer is working properly???
There must be something wrong with the.......
The temperatures records the next few days will be tough to be beat, but you never know...ReplyDelete
Today's record for Winnipeg is 30C.. 925 mb temps today are about 3C cooler than yesterday, so I don't think we'll see a repeat of another 30C day here today. Winnipeg has never recorded 2 days of 30C in October. There however will be a few records broken again today across Manitoba as temps climb in the mid to upper 20s.ReplyDelete
BTW, the low at YWG this morning was 16.7C, the warmest low ever for Oct 6th (prev record 12.2C 1909) and just shy of the warmest night ever for an October (17.2C, Oct 2 1879)
This is for sure a year of extremes, from very cold to very hot and wet to extremely dry. I couldn't beleive my eyes that it was 26C at 9pm last night and 17C at 7am. Is something wrong with our weather?ReplyDelete
Don't worry. We have another crack at that all time warmest night again tonight.ReplyDelete
Are thunderstorms possible tomorrow in Southern Manitoba???
How high could the winds get??
The possibilty for thunderstorms are looking pretty good tomorrow, as we see highs into the mid twenties combined with enough lift we could see some non severe thunderstorms so the stakes are high. although I dont know the amount of energy we will have tomorrow but i will tell you when i have more information.
A bit of a long shot....but there is hope of hitting 30C. Would that not be stunning to do it again.ReplyDelete
