Cool and unsettled rest of week.. turning sunnier and warmer over weekend into next week..

Cool and cloudy weather will dominate southern MB through Friday as a stubborn area of low pressure over NW Ontario circulates clouds and northwest winds over southern MB. As a result, temperatures will be some 10 degrees below normal for this time of year, which are now approaching 20C for daytime highs. Little additional precipitation is expected through Friday, although there may be some light showers or drizzle from time to time, with even a stray snowflurry possible Friday morning. The good news is that models are indicating a significant clearing tend for the weekend into next week, with temperatures warming to near or even above normal values next week. That will translate to temperatures in the 20s over southern MB along with more prolonged sunshine that we've been seeing of late, and gusty south winds at times, some welcome news that will help start drying out the excessively moist soil conditions over southern MB. We need it..

  1. If anyone's interested, I did a little write-up on the last system here:

And I for one, am looking forward to next week :)

  2. Is there an omega high next week?

  3. Models suggest an omega type block developing over northern SK over the weekend into early next week.. although it won't be a prolonged event as it weakens and drifts east next week. Unfortunately it looks like we'll be on the cool side of the block (eastern flank) here in southern MB before we get into some warmer air next week. Just give me some sunshine and I'll be happy!!

  4. All we have to do is get through today and then it is all looking good thereafter!

It feels horrible out there this morning with that stiff north winds!! :-(

  5. 850 mb cold core moving through southern MB tonight with temperatures of -2 to -5C. Weak area of lift coming through with upper trof in addition to NE upslope flow may give a few flurries tonight over higher elevations from Dauphin to Pilot Mound. Yes, its cold enough to snow out there. Winnipeg should be protected by low clouds and our lower elevation would give us a sprinkle or two.. possibly mixed with some wet flurries overnight into Friday morning. Then we start getting rid of this nonsense and start clearing out by the end of the day.

Thankfully, looks like a dry pattern finally shaping up over the weekend into next week.. with, dare I say, 7 days without measurable precipitation? Very good news for the flood fighting efforts. This would be a terrible time for another major pcpn event or wet period over southwest MB. Let's hope the next major pcpn event can hold off until the flooding crisis has passed..

  8. Someone submitted a photo on CBC's evening newscast from Kerr Lake, near Roblin, showing 2-3 cm of snow accumulation earlier today. Not pleasant..

Onward and upward from here! Sure will be nice to see that sun this weekend.. although that's the least of their concerns to our west.. Let's hope for the best for them..

  11. Nice to see that sunshine today.. FYI, the last time we had more than 2 full days of sun in Winnipeg was back in late March when we had 7 straight days of sunshine from March 23-29th. It's about time!

  12. Sure feels great to finally have the sun back on our side!

  13. The above normal water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico should set the stage for an increased risk of severe weather and extreme precip events this summer... particulary if the jetstream reamins strong as it migrates northwards. Here is a summary from the Twin Cities NWS office w.r.t. last Tuesday's surge of heat and humidity...

Record High Temperatures and Dew Points on May 10th

Incredible to have dewpoints in the low to mid twenties so early in the season before any real ET has kicked in.

  14. Hard to believe with the slow start to spring on the Prairies this year.. but forest fires developed northwest of Prince Albert this afternoon. Quite evident on the Prairie visible satellite loop.. (click on my name, link expires this evening)

  15. Great start to the weekend.. although that breeze today was a little cool. Tomorrow we lose the wind and gain a couple more degrees.. but it will feel more like 5-10C warmer without that wind. Enjoy! Sunny and warm rest of the week. Next threat of rain? You guessed it.. May 2-4 weekend.. but it's a long ways off and things will likely change, so we won't worry about that just yet..

  16. Loving this weather right now. Just spectacular!!

We'll need to keep an eye on a potential slow moving low pressure system Saturday or Sunday of the Long Weekend. Models are in pretty good agreement with a warm front pushing in from the south along with warm temps (close to 25). We may get our first shot of organized thunderstorms if things play out.

Could be a few days of wet weather as the pattern remains blocky, forcing the low pressure system to track slowly north into the region.

  17. Couldn't agree more Derek.. I forgot how nice the weather can be in southern MB! And it only gets better the rest of the week..

Will be watching that forecast for the weekend very closely for rainfall amounts.. that will impact flows into the La Salle from the controlled release. The last thing they need is a slow moving heavy rain event.. let's hope that doesn't happen..
