Heat building over Prairies

A large upper ridge of high pressure over western Canada is bringing the season's first taste of hot weather over the western Prairies today which will be spreading east into southern MB by Monday. High temperatures in southern Alberta will soar into the mid 30s today, while parts of the Okanagan in BC will hit the 40 degree mark. Here in Winnipeg, we have yet to hit 30 degrees this year.. but it looks like we will finally hit the mark on Monday with a forecast high of 31c. The 30 degree weather will be short lived however as cooler air moves in on the July 1st holiday and persists for the rest of the week. Temperatures on the July 1st holiday will still be warm.. in the upper 20s.. but they will be cooling off by evening as northerly winds bring in cooler air from the north. It should be dry however with no precipitation expected. Conditions for the remainder of the week look pleasant with generally sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 20s. Long range models are hinting at a return of hotter weather over southern MB next weekend into next week.

  1. Yeah... hard to believe but the models advertise yet another Hudson Bay vortex building in for the latter part of next week. GFS paints some very cool 850 MB air moving down with blocking ridge over pacific coast... truly a cold season pattern. A few cool nights are in store as an arctic type high builds in on the backside of the low.

I hope the models are correct in building the upper ridge over us again. They even show the next cold low off the pacific tracking well north of us for the first time this season.

  2. Today will be the hottest day of the year.....but that's not saying much!
The dewpoint is also quite high so it will be quite muggy also!!

  3. A high of only 29.7C at YWG airport Monday.. so the airport site still hasn't officially hit the 30 degree mark this year. The Forks however hit 30.9C and it was over 30C at several personal weather stations around the city, including my site at 30.6C. Looks like the airport will get another shot at hitting 30 degrees by the weekend!

As for today.. showers and thunderstorms moving through the Interlake this morning may slide down through Winnipeg by midday.. although the bulk of the activity should stay north and east of Winnipeg this afternoon. Conditions should be dry but a little breezy (out of the north) for fireworks tonight.
