Snow moving into Winnipeg/RRV Friday afternoon into Friday evening..

A clipper system from western Canada will track across southern MB Friday, bringing an area of snow with it. Snow from this system is expected to spread into Winnipeg and the Red River valley from the west Friday afternoon into Friday evening, with some slushy accumulations possible Friday night. Temperatures Friday afternoon should be near or just above freezing before the precipitation starts, so snow will likely be melting at first. However, as temperatures cool Friday evening, snow will likely start accumulating, especially on grassy surfaces, with amounts of 2-3 cm possible by Saturday morning. Northwesterly winds behind this system will usher in colder temperatures for Saturday along with occasional flurries. Much colder but dry conditions are expected early next week before temperatures moderate again later in the week.

  1. Any risk of freezing rain with this system??

  2. No... not a good setup for freezing rain. Timing is not ideal ( late afternoon) and temperatures aloft will be too cold for freezing rain. (You need a layer of above freezing air aloft to get freezing rain at the surface) It's going to be mainly snow, although if temperatures get warm enough in the afternoon (like +3C), it may start briefly as rain before changing to snow, especially in the southern RRV.

  5. Melanie.. Looks like Walhalla area will see more of a rain or wet snow mix this afternoon, with minimal accumulations if any. Temps are rising above freezing fairly quickly down there today.

  7. Shouldn't be much.. could see a coating to about 2 cm, mainly tonight. Look for snow to move in by mid afternoon or so although it will be melting initially.

  8. That cold front is sure going to have some bite in it tomorrow. Daytime highs that are around -8 are usually associated with snow on the ground this time of year.

  9. For tomorrow's football game in Regina, they are calling for temps falling to -15 with a windchill of -25. That is not going to be pleasant in the stands for the fans!!

  10. Kickoff is at 3:30 pm with temps near -11C to start the game, and northerly winds of 30 km/h giving wind chills near -20. Temps will fall towards -15C by evening although winds should dropping off as well. CFL football playoff weather! :)
