Major winter storm to hit south of the border over Dakotas/Minnesota.. blizzard conditions possible late Tuesday into Wednesday

A powerful winter storm system is forecast to track across South Dakota into southern Minnesota Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing widespread heavy snow and blizzard conditions to portions of the eastern Dakotas and Minnesota. The worst conditions are expected near and south of the Fargo area, where snowfall totals of 30 cm or more are expected along with strong winds and blizzard conditions, especially Tuesday night into Wednesday. Travel will become severely impacted in this area with highway closures possible, including the I-94 corridor between Bismarck and Minneapolis. The storm is expected to affect much of northern and and central Minnesota as well, including through the Minneapolis area where a wintery mix of snow, freezing rain and ice pellets is likely. People planning on travelling to or through the Dakotas or Minnesota tonight or Wednesday should be prepared to alter travel plans as this major winter storm moves in.

The storm is not expected to impact southern Manitoba, although some snow from the system will spread up to the international border where a few cm are possible.

  1. The latest GFS has shifted the storm track slightly north. Areas along the U.S border could see a few inches of snow!!!

  2. There's definitely been a pattern change. 4 or 5 possible areas of low pressure within our vicinity over the next 10 days or so.
No confidence that we'll see much but somewhere within agricultural manitoba there will be some more snow.

  7. Looks like heaviest snow with this storm has been over central MN so far with 6-12" (15-30 cm) reported as of this morning north of MSP, with lighter amounts over the Dakotas. Overall, looks like models overestimated pcpn amounts with this system especially over western flank through the Dakotas. Appears last evening's convection over the central plains may have robbed system from good moisture influx that was expected to wrap well north into storm and generate the heftier totals the models were advertising. Storm has been stretched too which has limited northward extent of snow shield.. (much to the dismay of Dan GFK I'm sure) Overall, not as bad a storm as earlier projections were showing..

  10. Hi there

Glad I was off Mon-Tue and not forecasting this model fail. But one thing that didnt help it was all the convection south of the system which likely robbed some moisture that was due to track due north. The northern cut off was going to be sharp but models failed miserably until the last 6 hours before. Those things I have missed before in being too far north with the snow. Did get 10-12 inches Alexandria MN into Sisseton SD with 4-6 Fargo area. Maybe a flake or two in Grand Forks.
