Increasing winds and heat for Sunday..

Perfect weather today will give way to more uncomfortable conditions Sunday as a strong southerly flow of hot and more humid air spreads into southern Manitoba. A developing low pressure system over Montana will push a warm front across southern MB overnight into Sunday morning with a few thunderstorms likely along the front, especially north and west of Winnipeg. As the warm front pushes north, gusty southerly winds of 40 to 60 km/h will develop over southern MB Sunday tapping a very warm airmass over the Northern US plains. Temperatures of 32-35C are likely across southern MB and the RRV by Sunday afternoon, with humidex values of 40-43C. The hot and windy conditions will continue through Sunday evening with temperatures likely remaining near 30C through midnight. A sharp cold front will cross southern MB Monday bringing showers and thunderstorms along with cooler temperatures.

  1. I for one am happy this "Steam Jungle" event will be short lived. Please keep your pets indoors tomorrow if the 'dex climbs to +40! B R U T A L! I'll be so happy once the calendar rolls into September and then start enjoying the best time of the year, ... The Fall.

  5. Unlike you ROB if long term outlooks are accurate we may be pining for this steam bath later this winter. You may get your 40-40 wish if GFKs NWS Fall and Winter outlook are near on.

Two of the years with which they compare long term weather patterns for this winter, are 1978(79) and !995(96).

1979 produced -38.8 on Feb 16 preceded by -37.7 on Jan 12 Plus +34 on June 13 was the Maximum.

1996 produced three days of -40 weather peaking (bottoming) at -41.8 on Feb 1st. less than 5 months later in Jun +35.4

  6. That clear patch that opened up on satellite just allowed temps at the airport to shoot up to 29 degrees

I'm guessing this wasn't too expected by anybody

  7. Yeah, slower moving front and a little extra sunshine helped Winnipeg/RRV get a bonus 30C day today.. but the cooler air is not too far away with temps down to low 20s near Portage and upper teens by Brandon. Doppler radar shows cold front is just moving across Woodlands radar right now, should be coming through Winnipeg by 3 pm or so at which time our temps will drop noticeably.

  8. What is Distant Precipitation for Current Condition in the EC 7 Day Winnipeg Forecast Page

  9. Hi Jim,

Weatheroffice reports Distant Precipitation whenever the observer reports VCSH, or vicinity showers. This is reported when the observer can clearly see precipitation falling, but if it's not within the 5 mile radius of the airport.

  11. Rob!

How do you like the results from the weather station since you moved?

I know you mentioned that you would monitor for a while and move the weather station if you were not impressed!

  12. daniel..

Overall the new location is not too bad. The wind is the main issue, since it's quite sheltered at the current site.. but that's indicative of my whole backyard which backs onto a forest.. so I can't do much about that. On light wind days, my temperature readings are 1-2 degrees too high, especially through the morning and midday hours on sunny days. But overall, temperature readings have been generally acceptable. Rainfall readings have been very good. So overall, the site is OK.. but I'll have to see how it does in the other seasons to see if I need to move it or not.

  13. oh my gosh yesterday (august 20,2010) was wicked up in victoria beach we had a huge thunderstorm roll in by 10 pm with vivid constant strobe lightning with heavy rain and wind. It lasted a full hour. We even lost power because of all the lightning. Never seen a storm like that in years!
