Cold wave easing.. milder but unsettled conditions on the way

The frigid weather pattern of the past week will finally be easing this week as an unseasonably cold Arctic airmass lifts out of the Prairies. In its place will be a milder but unsettled weather pattern developing, as weather systems from the Pacific push across the southern Prairies.  The first such system is expected to spread snow into southern MB by midday Wednesday, with 2 to 4 cm possible by Wednesday evening along with increasing southerly winds gusting to 60 or 70 km/h which will likely produce some blowing and drifting snow.  Periods of snow will continue Wednesday night into Thursday with another 5 to 10 cm possible as the main storm system tracks east of Manitoba, but temperatures will finally be rising to seasonal values near -4C.. a virtual heat wave compared to the Arctic conditions that began March. Some briefly colder weather will follow in the wake of this system for Friday and Saturday, before another storm system brings in milder but snowy conditions for next Monday or Tuesday.  Yes, more snow in the forecast, but at least, a little more seasonable weather to look forward to in the days ahead..

    Models have come in with a little more snow for us overnight into Thursday, with most showing a good shot of 5-10 cm now, on top of the 2-4 cm expected this afternoon. The snow overnight into Thursday morning may be heavy at times which will impact the Thursday morning commute. Luckily, winds will be dropping off Thursday morning so blowing and drifting snow shouldn't be an issue and temperature will be mild enough (-5C) for salt to be effective. A snowy, slushy commute on the way tomorrow.

    For today, snow still on track to move in this afternoon with about 2-4 cm by evening, along with gusty south winds to 60 or 70 km/h giving some blowing and drifting snow, so the drive home will be impacted today.

    Getting some heavy snow over western MB with this first shot.. visibilities down to 1/4 mile in Dauphin and 1/2 mile in Brandon. They had to close the Yellowhead Hwy from Russell to the SK border due to a collision and poor driving conditions. So this first shot of snow is packing more of a punch then first thought. Could see a good burst of 4-8 cm with this wave this afternoon, especially north of Winnipeg into the southern Interlake. In addition, our increasing southerly winds will compound those poor vsbys with blowing and drifting snow, so caution advised if on the highways this afternoon and evening.. especially outside the Perimeter.

    Snow has spread into Portage La Prairie as of 130 pm and should be pushing into Winnipeg over the next hour or so. Band of heaviest snow still tracking north of Winnipeg into the Interlake.. but we should see some heavier bursts here with 2-4 cm still looking good for the city by evening.. more possible just to our north.

    Another white knuckle drive home on the south perimeter. I don't mind this weather in November but March? Come on Mother Nature!. Haven't we suffered enough!

    Rob this appears to be a much bigger snow shower than expected. Any updates on the 2-4cm forecast. In the last hour we've had steady snow in south winnipeg with poor visibility varying 150 meters to less than 30 meters along the RR west bank at Bishop Grandin. Pembina Cam should show it if its up.

    Anonymous... Yes, that first batch was pretty intense... 6 cm at the airport, with a lot of blowing and drifting snow making it worse. Looks like first batch is tapering off in the city and we get a bit of a break before the next wave overnight into Thursday, with another 10 cm likely.

    Just over 5 cm at my place with this first batch.. calling it 5.4 cm here in Charleswood. A few hours break before the next batch, currently over southern SK, spreads into Winnipeg for the morning commute. Another 5-8 cm possible with this next wave, but winds will be lighter than this afternoon's mini blizzard along with nice mild temperatures.

    Snow should be out by late morning but one last batch could give us another 3-5 cm later Thursday through Thursday evening as winds swing into the northwest and bring us some colder air. Total snowfall amounts of 13-18 cm for Winnipeg by the time it's all over by Friday morning.

    2-4 cm still looks good for tonight. Maybe up to 5 cm if we get some briefly heavier bands, but I don't expect much more than that. Winds will be picking up tonight from the north to about 30 km/h.. along with falling temperatures getting below -10C so we'll get some drifting snow as well.

    Next batch of snow should be spreading into Winnipeg by 6 pm or so.. lasting for about 3-4 hours. Snow is falling heavily at times in southern Saskatchewan, so we could see some heavy bursts again. 3-5 cm likely, closer to 5 if we get those heavier bursts. Once that clears out, we should be snow free for a few a days..

    Todd.. I picked up another 5 cm last night, generally about 5-6 cm in the city. Two day total of 15 cm at my place in Charleswood, generally about 15-18 cm across the city.
