A nice break from the cold snap..

After a week long cold spell, a much deserved break from the cold weather will be on the way to southern Manitoba this weekend, with temperatures finally rising to normal, and even above normal values by Sunday. Tonight will be another cold night with temperatures dropping to the -28C mark this evening before temperatures start to rise overnight as winds shift into the southwest and clouds increase. Saturday will be a "transition day" as southerly winds start to push the cold Arctic air out of the Red River valley. Temperatures will be climbing through day reaching the -12C mark by evening. But don't let that "milder" high of -12C fool you. Like most transition days, it will still feel quite cold Saturday as brisk southerly winds of 30 gusting 50 km/h produce wind chills in the minus 30s in the morning, and minus 20s in the afternoon.  Sunday is looking like a much nicer day with lighter winds and temperatures reaching above normal highs of -4C in the afternoon. Break out the beachwear!  Above normal temperatures are expected to continue Monday and Tuesday before a return to Arctic air by Wednesday with temperatures back into the minus 20s. So enjoy the next few days of milder weather while you can!

  1. Definitely not looking forward to the cooldown next week with another dose of arctic air, though I don't know how many of you have seen Brett Andersons Blog yet. He mentions by the 11th of February all of the cold arctic air will remain locked up North (Doors to the arctic air close for the year)thats when the warmer weather he expects will arrive. What do you think?

  2. Yeah, i saw his blog today.....not sure what to make of it right now. That would certainly be a welcomed scenario if that happens....we'll see.

  3. Hey Rob I see EC is now calling for 60% chance for flurries on Monday and Tuesday. Just wondering is this going to be the usual forecast of chance of flurries and then as it gets closer changes to larger amount of snow?

  4. Well GFS is calling for 8 cm for Monday.

  5. NAM, GFS and the WN are now saying around 4 cm for Monday - Tuesday.

  6. Daryl..

Models are showing a weak system passing through southern MB Monday.. with some snow ahead of it. Right now, looks like minimal amounts for Winnipeg/RRV.. 2 cm or so.. with a little more through the interlake.

  8. Note: As of Jan 17th, observations from YWG airport are from the NavCanada AWOS autostation, augmented by a human observer (aka HWOS station) See official notice below. This puts climate data for YWG airport in a real mess now. Hourly data is available from the HWOS site, but not daily stats. Daily stats are available from the old EC AWOS, but not hourly data. Other daily data for YWG comes from the XWG climate site (Winnipeg CS) which is what Weatheroffice displays for "yesterday's" stats.

So keeping track of YWG climate data will be a hodgepodge of data sources that will be difficult to consolidate. I will try to sort through this mess in a later post.

  9. Again Rob, things are going backwards... The data accuracy is dwindling every year. Incredibly, the AWOS station got 2.5 mm of precip yesterday when there were only a few snowflakes. Those must have been quite the moisture-laden flakes...

I found the hourly data section for Winnipeg too, but sadly there's a lot of missing data in the weather conditions column.

  10. The 2.5 mm at YWG AWOS was likely residual from the snow Thursday night (when only 0.5 mm was recorded) Again this shows that automated data with little or no quality control puts the credibility of this climate data into question. Your comments are valid..
