A low pressure system over northwest North Dakota will track along the international border tonight into Friday, bringing some snow to southern MB. Snow will spread into SW Manitoba this afternoon and move into the RRV tonight. Snow will likely persist into Friday morning before tapering off in the afternoon. Snowfall amounts from this system are expected to range from 2 to 4 cm along the TransCanada corridor including Winnipeg, to 5-10 cm towards the international border. Colder conditions are expected this weekend in the wake of this system, before a return to milder weather early next week.
Updated storm totals: (March 2)
Snowfall was a lot more than expected with this storm system.. with amounts of 10 cm over Winnipeg and the northern RRV and up to 20 cm over the southern valley. Some snowfall totals reported over the past 24 hours..
Winnipeg.......... 10-12 cm
Stony Mtn ........ 9 cm
Landmark ........ 10 cm
Steinbach ......... 10 cm
St Labre ............ 16 cm /SE of Steinbach/
Winkler ............. 19 cm
Morden ............. 15 cm
Altona ............... 15 cm
Pinawa.............. 12 cm
Falcon Lake ...... 6 cm
Kinda looks like we may get snow a little earlier in the evening then they were originally thinking? Looks pretty green in the radar picture as well.
ReplyDeleteDaryl.. Yes, snow has moved in quicker this evening than earlier forecast. Forecast has been updated to reflect that. Looks like we could have 2-4 cm into tomorrow morning before it tapers off. Upper low is over ND, so heaviest amounts still expected mainly south of the city. However, these slow moving systems can sometimes surprise you with higher amounts.
ReplyDeleteEC changed their forecast again!!!
ReplyDeleteRob, you were calling for 2- 4 cm of snow right off the hop. Good job!!!!
I've picked up 1.5 cm as of 10:30 pm, with radar showing snow continuing at this rate into the overnight period. Looks like main snow shield has pushed a little further north so we will likely be up to 5 cm by morning.
ReplyDeleteI think this is non event is going to turn out to be our biggest snow fall of the season
ReplyDeleteFunny how EC initially called for 2 cm and by the time this is done we could have up to 10 cm.
ReplyDelete7 cm as of 8 am here in Winnipeg.. bands of heavier snow still rotating over the city this morning with another 2-4 cm likely by midday before things wind down. Yes, this harmless looking system could be our biggest snowfall event of the season!
ReplyDeleteA winter wonderland out there. 10 Cm of snow seem likely by the time things wrap up.
ReplyDeleteBTW A high risk of severe storms today by the SPC!!!
Snow seems very fluffy for "spring" any SWC numbers yet.
ReplyDeleteReports this morning of 4 inches of snow in Langdon and Cavalier ND....
ReplyDelete9.5 cm as of 9:15 AM here in south end.
ReplyDeleteWinds have picked up quite a bit in the last hour. The temp is also gonna drop quick so the roads will be quite slick!
ReplyDeleteLooks like Winnipeg is the epi-center of this snow event....LOL~~~
ReplyDelete8.7cm of snow here in Winnipeg south-east as of 10am.
ReplyDeleteWith some heavy returns to the North east of Winnipeg and that to rotate through, SOME parts of Winnipeg could see very close to 15Cm of snow, when all is said and done. WINTER WONDERLAND!
ReplyDeleteI am not complaining because I actually love storms but how did 2 cm end up being 10 cm.? Did this snow push much further North from the south? Just curious. Every news cast I watched only called for 2 cm.
ReplyDeletethanks.
reports show 3.5 inches near Pembina to around 5 west of the Red River from Cavalier to Langdon. winds picking up now and travel poor in that area.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteLooking outside it appears to have stopped. Is it finally finished or is there more to come? EC at 11 am says 2 to 4 cm today.
thanks
Another 2 cm of snow for Winnipeg, with that snowband remaining fairly stationary.
ReplyDeleteRob , update on your snow total in your backyard>>> Thanks!!
Thanks for webcam links Dan.. very useful.
ReplyDeleteAs for our snow.. radar shows band of snow edging back into city from the east.. so looks like we'll be back into some snow again this afternoon for while before it's all said and done. Another 2 cm or so possible so we'll be up to around 10 cm or so in Winnipeg before it's over. 15-20 cm possible south of the city.
This snowfall has been a challenging one to predict.. mainly because of snow pushing further north than expected as well as banding that has given heavier snowfall rates at times.
My sleep event turned into a WTF event when I awoke. Someone left the snow machine on. I guess it further illustrates how tricky it is forecasting March weather.
ReplyDeleteWinds are just howling out there!!! Blowing snow is quite the concern.
ReplyDeleteROB, is the same system that is giving the major tornado outbreak to the OHIO valley???
daniel..
ReplyDeleteNo, this is a separate system from the main action to our southeast. That storm will be will quite intense as it moves over the Great Lakes with severe weather in the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, and strong winds up to 100 km/h pushing into southern Ontario.
Will update backyard snow totals late today as I'm at work all day. Close to 10 cm downtown..
Is this system ever going to leave?
ReplyDeleteDaryl..
ReplyDeleteYes, but slowly. Wrap around snow continues across the RRV, and will be with us through the evening. The snow is generally light but we get occasional bursts of heavier snow from time to time as these narrow bands of more intense snow rotate through. I would say expect snow to continue through this evening before tapering off overnight. As for additional amounts, maybe another cm or two.. but it will be tough to measure as the winds will be a factor with drifting and blowing snow through the evening. Overall, a headache of a storm to deal with.
That storm was one heck of a surprise today, I had to even update my blog during this mornings snowfall to make sure people knew I was on top of things. I originally thought this system would bring a tiny 2cm of snow, sure enough I picked up about 10 cm of snow at my place in st.james. I'll make sure that I follow the weather more carefully from now on after this event. How much did you get at your place rob?
ReplyDeleteTough to get an accurate total due to the drifting, but an average of about 12 cm at my place. 7 cm up to 8 am, then another 5 cm today. Radar finally looking like things are dying out this evening.. but boy, it took awhile. Not a well handled event that's for sure. General amounts of 10-12 cm across the RRV, with 15 cm or more over the Morden-Winkler-Altona area.
ReplyDeleteAs bad as our weather was, it was a lot worse down south with a tornado outbreak.
ReplyDeleteNo comparison.. one of the most prolific tornado outbreaks I've ever seen. So many tornadic supercells with text book structure, moving at 60 mph over populated areas.. incredible. (That West Liberty KY hook echo was jaw dropping) The death toll is terrible, but no question, NWS saved many lives yesterday..
ReplyDeleteI completly agree with you rob! It's just devastating to see the damage caused by those tornadoes, especially in such populated areas. I have never seen any thing like that in my lfe, even the number of tornadoes that hit are astounding up to 100+ tornadoes hit the states. I am just glad that this didn't happen in our province yet. Head over to my blog for info on those destructive storms and how you can help people in need. I should have some info tomorrow. Click my name to be directed to my blog!
