Records melt in March warm spell..

An unseasonably warm airmass over southern Manitoba produced several record high temperatures today, including Winnipeg where a high of +12.8C was recorded, besting the previous record for March 11th of 12.5C set in 1981. Other records today included a toasty 14.8C in Pinawa (prev record 13.2C in 1995) and 14.6C in Melita. The MB hot spot was Wasagaming in Riding Mountain Natl Park at 15.8C. The record mild weather is forecast to continue through the rest of the week, with highs of +9-16C expected through Saturday along with a rapidly diminishing snowpack. In fact, it's possible that Winnipeg may see a string of record highs through the entire week!

  2. Amazing how much snow we lost yesterday and last night. Open areas of grass everywhere! 25 cm of snow on the ground when we started the weekend!

  3. Won't need much of a temperature increase to beat the record today.

  4. Rob!!

I see that it was sitting around 7 C all night long.
    Could it be????

Is it possible that we came very close to breaking the record for the day OVERNIGHT????? Oh My....

  5. Was raining quite steadily here in south end where I am just about 20 min ago. Already measured just over 1 mm this morning.

  6. If the charts hold out, we could potentially see a major system affecting us next Monday. Take that with a grain of salt though :) but the 192hr 500mb chart is showing some significant upper troughing with an associated surface low over southern Manitoba, something that I haven't seen even on a long range chart for a very long time now.

  7. Yes, ECMWF is showing the potential for our first round of thunderstorms of the season next Monday. Still a ways away but bears watching!

We are sure having a tough time clearing out today. Brandon cleared in the late morning/early afternoon and saw temperatures rise a few degrees higher than ours. They've also been under strong winds out of the WNW, however.

Looks like our coldest night of week tonight with lows possibly not going below zero the rest of the week!

  8. Winds have finally shifted to westerly and it is drying out. Starting to see some sun too. Finally ;) Cool how a direction change makes such a big and obvious difference

  9. Thunderstorms in March?!?! What next? I'm loving this weather, just hope we don't pay for it with snow on Victoria Day.

  10. I think we broke another record today 8.1C!

  11. Official high of +9.7C at YWG airport.. another record high. Will be interesting to see if we can nudge above tomorrow's record high of +12.2C. A high of +10C is forecast for Winnipeg, but we have sunshine and a brisk SE wind along with little remaining snowcover. We could do it with enough sun..

  12. I cannot believe the level of warmth we are experiencing right now.I say there is a fair chance of some part of Southern Manitoba hitting the 20 C mark this weekend!!

  13. Rob!!!

Please take a look at this EVENING's GFS model run.

Unreal amount of warmth coming up with 850mb temps at around 18C.

How warm could we get if that model run verifies>>>>?????

  14. daniel..

If we get to 18C at 850 mb, that would probably equate to a maximum temperature of around 23C or so at this time of year.. provided there's no snow on the ground, and we have plenty of sun (as well as some wind to mix down the warm air) I see that EC is forecasting 22C for Winnipeg for Sat the 17th. If that verifies, it would be the earliest that Winnipeg has ever hit 20C (current earliest date is March 23rd, 1910 at 22.8C)

  15. Looks like the record books are getting a complete OVERHAUL this week :D

It's not just here, all over the U.S northeast and midwest too.

  16. A high of 22 C and low of 14 on Saturday :O
That would DESTROY the old record by a full 10 C. Unheard of!

    Summer like :P

  17. Lunch hour temps:

    Winnipeg @ 7
    Portage @ 11

  18. A low of 12 and a high of 24 forecast for Emerson on Saturday!!! That's late June weather...

  19. Where did you guys get the info about the thunderstorm potential on monday?

  20. High of 11.7C at YWG airport today.. just 0.5C off the day's record. Looks like we'll come up just shy again tomorrow, before we get on a record high streak Thursday into the weekend.

Amazing warmth just to the south of us today in South Dakota with Pierre hitting an incredible 28C (82F)!

  21. Just got home from work!
It feels like a early summer night!

I kid you not, people are out wearing shorts tonight :)

  22. Wait until Sunday and Monday! Big push of unseasonably warm air coming up from the south.. Temps in the 20s with lows in the teens Sunday night. Showers and possible thunderstorms Monday night into Tuesday..

Friday is our first real chance of seeing 20C.. then Sunday into Monday looks more likely of reaching the 20C mark (provided there's not a lot of cloud cover coming in) Regardless, we have a real good chance of seeing our earliest 20C reading on record in Winnipeg over the next few days. Extraordinary.

  23. At this rate we could even break the record for most 20°C+ days in any given March as well!
Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the predicted high of 27°C in Morden for Sunday.. Boy, get the flip flops and bathing suits out! Too bad the lakes are still frozen! lol

  24. U could go ice fishing in shorts and a t-shirt

  25. There is one thing to break a record by a degree of two, but when you completely destroy ( like what might happen in a few days) that is something to write home about!

The city parks will be overflowing with people this weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  26. By Jove, the contrast is unbelievable. The forecast calls for +27 C on Sunday for Emerson and Morden, and -27 C for Baker Lake, NU. You don't see this very often!

  27. 27C forecast high for parts of Southern Manitoba on Sunday ................AMAZING, UNREAL, STUNNING, JAW DROPPPING.

  28. Anyone hitting the driving range this weekend???

Me, I'm working on my suntan.

  30. Beautiful weather out there, and with an increasing southerly flow it's only going to get nicer from here out.

Sunday night looks to be interesting/tricky; with marginal instability aloft, a decent 850mb jet and and advancing upper cold front. Most ingredients are in place to support nocturnal thunderstorms, but I'm skeptical that there will be enough moisture available aloft to allow anything that does from in ND to make it all the way in to S.MB.

Hey Rob, do you know if there's a record date for "Earliest Nocturnal Thunderstorm in Winnipeg"?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I don't know about nocturnal thunderstorms specifically, but the only March storms I can find on the online records from the airport, which go back to 1953 (I can't find any info on earlier years), is 27th March 2004. The only other two March thunderstorms on there are 29th March 1999 and 28th March 1960. None of them were at night though; the 1960 one was latest at 7-8 pm.

  32. I want to break March's all time warmest temperature ever recorded this weekend. It can be done!!!

  33. Brad.. I don't have stats for thunderstorm dates in Winnipeg. I will defer to anonymous' post on early season tstms records in Winnipeg.. thanks for the info!
