Nice weekend ahead.. warming trend into early next week

A dry westerly flow across the Prairies will maintain sunny skies and pleasant weather across southern MB this weekend, with temperatures rebounding back into the 20s. Mother's Day on Sunday looks especially nice with afternoon temperatures climbing up to the mid 20s after some morning cloudiness. The warm dry weather is expected to continue through the first few days of the new week, before a cold front ushers in a few showers and cooler weather by Thursday.

  1. Looking at the visible satellite, is that smoke coming towards the city from the Riding Mountain area? If it's cloud, why is it just continuously forming? I guess we'll see soon, it's almost here

Actually, that was cloud coming off the Riding Mtns. It was an example of what is known as a lee wave.. a wave in the atmosphere that develops to the lee of higher elevation. An area of moist air descends to the east of the higher terrain, then lifts up again forming an area of cloud, before dissipating further east as the air descends again. This type of cloud appears to be generating from a single point or line, which can appear similar to a smoke source as you suggested. This type of cloud formation is more common to the east of the Rockies which has more pronounced elevation and wind effects.

  4. Another sunny, breezy and very dry day out there today with dewpoints below 0C, and relative humidities below 20% Winds gusting to 50 km/h and temperatures in the low to mid 20s today and Sunday will make for extreme drying conditions this weekend, and an elevated risk of grass or brush fires.

  10. I don't recall seeing RH values below 10% in southern MB.. but it's possible that it's happened, especially during hot dry springs like 1980 or 1988. You'd have to have dewpoint spreads of 35C or more to get RH values that low (e.g. 25C with a dewpoint of -10, 30C with TD of -5, etc) Looking back at April 1980, I see Winnipeg had a RH of 10% on April 21 with a temperature of 32C and a dewpoint of -3C. That very dry spring routinely saw afternoon RH values of 10-15% in April and May.

For today.. I don't think we'll see RH values below 10% in southern MB, although 15% is possible with T/TD spreads of 25-30C this afternoon. Gusty west winds will make for an elevated fire risk once again today, especially in dried out areas like SE MB.
