Milder weekend.. then getting even colder for next week..

After snapping us back to reality, Mother Nature will bring some moderating temperatures to southern MB this weekend as a warm front over southern Saskatchewan edges eastward. This front will bring in some light snow to southern MB tonight with a dusting to 2 cm possible over the RRV. On Saturday cloudy skies are expected with a chance of flurries, and temperatures around the -8C mark along with light winds. On Sunday, a clipper system from Alberta is forecast to track across southern MB bringing milder conditions to the RRV along with some snow, especially north of Winnipeg through the Interlake regions where 5-10 cm is possible. Colder air will follow in the wake of this storm system by Monday with temperatures plunging back to below normal values for next week. In fact, it will be the coldest weather of the season so far with highs in the minus 20s and our first -30C readings possible in Winnipeg by Tuesday morning. By Wednesday a clipper system will bring in cloud and some light snow followed by clearing and colder weather for the end of week. Looking further ahead, long range guidance is hinting at moderating temperatures for the end for January along with an increased chance of snow bearing systems over southern MB as a strong jet stream sets up along the US border.

  2. Scary looking Arctic high over central Alaska.. 1056 mb with plenty of -40 to -45C air starting to spill into Yukon. This airmass will be the source of our cold outbreak this upcoming week. Get ready for more cold weather!

  10. Can't talk Jim.. I'm heading back to Jamaica.. :)

j/k... Those temps for Thursday are automated output.. but they look possible. Arctic ridge builds in Thursday behind weak clipper Wednesday, with clearing skies and light winds. With 850 temps of -25 to -30C, that could easily translate to lows in the minus 30s for us Thursday, and highs in the minus 20s. Looks short lived though as we get into a more unsettled pattern by next weekend with moderating temps and some snow..

  11. Snow squall (?) in the city now: can barely see less than a KM ahead, it's that bad.

  12. Ya can barely see across the street here too. Went out in thick of it and already measured 2 cm just in the past 20 minutes.

  13. Yeah.. same here.. about 2 cm in that 30 minute squall. Brief but intense.

  14. Cold front just went through Winnipeg.. strong northwest winds gusting to 60 km/h along with some blowing snow, and a temperature drop of -1C to -4C in a few minutes. Hope you enjoyed the mild weekend.. here comes the next cold snap!

  15. Impressive cold under that Arctic high over the Yukon tonight.. currently -45C at Dawson and Mayo. Could see temps of -48 to -50C there tonight. Whitehorse currently at -36C.. will likely drop below -40C for the first time this winter out there. This morning they had a low of -37C (forecast was -26C, a slight bust)

  16. Doppler radar showing bands of flurries and blowing snow in the gusty northwest flow. Almost looks like streamers coming off Lake Manitoba, except they can't be since lakes are ice covered. Instead, radar is picking up bands of blowing snow off the snow covered lake. Probably resulting in some poor visibilities this evening between Winnipeg and Portage, including Hwy 1.

  17. Look at the temperature plummet from near the freezing mark earlier today. What a cold front!!

  18. Hi Rob,

Just wondering what your thoughts are on this week.

Clipper on Wednesday bringing much snow?

Larger system moving in for the weekend?

    thanks!!

  19. Why is it that the weaker strength systems at 1001 mb always bring down the colder air? well mean time the Colorado Lows that are around 997mb always bring a short batch of cold air.

  20. -62 windchill in Ranklin Inlet tonight. Rob wouldn't that be so such much to experience.....Rob???? Are you still there???
hmmmmm......( must have went back to Jamaica) :-)

  21. No, I'm still here.. chillin' with the rest of you!

Mark.. Wednesday's clipper looks fairly weak with the main energy going to our south. Probably a dusting to 2 cm for Winnipeg at most.

Saturday's system looks a bit stronger, and Winnipeg could see about 5 cm from that one based on preliminary model guidance. We'll have a better idea as we get later in the week..

  22. Watch for the temperatures to really plummet tonight. Especially at the airport with that light NW flow. I'm going all out on this one and saying the airport will hit a low of -30 tonight....LOL!!!
