Mild week ahead..

Milder weather is on tap over the next few days as a westerly flow of Pacific air spreads across the Prairies one again this week. Temperatures are forecast to climb to the freezing mark by Wednesday over the RRV along with gusty south winds. Some snow is possible in the wake of this system Wednesday night into Thursday, with colder weather forecast for the weekend. Temperatures however are only expected to drop to near normal values for this time of year, which are highs of -13 and lows of -23C. At this time, there are no indications of a return to the deep freeze that we experienced last week. The tame winter of 2011-12 continues..

  2. Interesting line of snow heading through the Interlake region. Looks like we could get a bit of snow in Winnipeg in the next little while.

  5. Well.. this January is currently on pace to finish with a monthly mean temperature around -11.0C, which would make it the 3rd warmest January on record in Winnipeg (since 1873) Much of this was due to our exceptionally mild start to the month that averaged a phenomenal 15C above normal over the first 10 days. Our cold snap last week notched us down a bit, but only a few degrees, otherwise we would be flirting with warmest January honours. This coming off our 9th warmest December. So yeah, it's been an exceptionally tame winter so far. One can only imagine how warm it could have been had it been an El Nino winter!

  6. Band of freezing rain over southeast SK pushing into SW Manitoba this morning. Short duration event (maybe 30-45 minutes) and light amounts, but may give some icy condition on roadways. Freezing rain warnings have been issued. If the band holds together, it would move into Winnipeg/RRV later this morning, possible starting out as snow for us.

  7. Hi Rob,

Looking at the radar earlier I thought we were going to get some snow/rain for sure. Now it appears to have broken up and gone North and South. Geez....

  9. Yeah, those southerly winds were really howling up the valley today with gusts to 70 km/h at the YWG airport today (so much for SCRIBE forecast guidance giving 30 km/h winds today!) Those winds gave some heavy drifting snow, quite evident on some exposed eastbound lanes into work this evening where drifts were 30 cm over the road in places.

  12. Don.. I heard the effects of the solar storm were waning, so I think the chance of northern lights is low. Not that I saw any the past couple of nights..

  14. The latest CPC 6-10 day and 8-14 day outlooks are just insane. I've never seen such glowing red positive anomalies over such a widespread area of the US for that long a period. Amazing.. so much for the AO turning negative recently..
