More rain on the way over southern MB..

It will be a nice start to the weekend today over southern MB with plenty of sunshine, light winds, low humidity and temperatures around 23C this afternoon. But in what is becoming an all too familiar pattern this year, the nice weather will not last long. A system pushing in from Montana will spread another round of showers and thunderstorms into southern MB Sunday, reaching SW Manitoba in the morning, and the Red River valley by late afternoon. General rainfall amounts of 10-20 mm are expected across southern MB Sunday through Sunday night into Monday, with thunderstorms bringing locally heavy rain of 25 to 40 mm in some areas. This will spell more bad news for the Souris and Assiniboine watersheds which are completely saturated and unable to take any more water. Wet weather will move into the Interlake regions Monday with generally drier weather for much of the upcoming week.

  2. Rob, it makes this years Assiniboine and Lake Manitoba issues even less like 1976 That year from the 19th of April to the 3rd of June
    Winnipeg 14.7 mm of rain
    Brandon ..10.2
    Dauphin ..7.1
Comparable numbers this year all exceed 100mm and some 200mm
Our monsoon spring rains that year came in June after? the flood passed.

  4. What is weird...is that down here in Grand Forks we actually could use some rain. A few folks are watering their lawns. We are close to average for the year, but quite dry this June...running over an inch below normal.

For those who dont know....NWS offices in the U.S. are on facebook. Go to facebook and search for US National Weather Service Grand Forks. We post general weather info....and hope to get feedback regarding weather events. It is still in an official "experimental" stage meaning NWS headquarters havent quite figured out how we should use it. Nothing knew there :)

  7. Hi Dan GF!
    Thanks for the update!
I had a chance to check out NWS Grand Forks on Facebook. Nicely done.
Wonder If Environment Canada will one day ever do something like that??
As for your shortage of rain, looks like you'll get your fair share this upcoming week!!

  8. How is this next weather system going to work out in the Winnipeg area? Is it going to start early Monday or later in the day? Originally they seemed to have been calling for a lot of rain but now not so much or has it just shifted locations?

  9. Radar in north dakota has lit up in the past hour.
Wonder if we will be seeing that heavy rain into southern Manitoba or if the storms will fall apart??

  10. Very Heavy rain heading into South western Manitoba tonight! Rainfall amounts of 3- 5 inches has already been recieved in areas of North Dakota. Hopefully things will simmer down or that will spell bad news for western Manitoba!

  12. Dan GF I Like the changes to your NWS page. Watching that STS box moving north towards Harvey and Rugby. Think it will make our Souris river or just stay east.

  14. 24 degrees in the Pilot Mound area where skies have cleared. Look for storms to continue firing further south in the coming hours..

  16. I have a very nice view of that storm to the northeast of Portage!
Looking from my balcony in Winnipeg I can see more towering thunderstorms to the south!!!

  17. Looks like that line of storms will just pass to the north of us. But, since the sun's out, we might see some storms firing up here.

  21. Pretty much a non-event day in the city. Sun's setting, and storms are beginning to weaken.

  22. There was a weak TOR in eastern North Dakota...9 north of Luverne ND...about 50 miles or so southwest of Grand Forks. I put the link to a video someone put on youtube showing it and a great couple of pix. Check out the US National Weather Service Grand Forks Facebook page.

  23. Look at Brandons dewpoint last night! At 8:00 at night it was 15 C
then at 9:00 it dropped to 1 C!
Is that a mistake? Then the next hour it went back up to 14 C!!! hmmm....????

  24. Some very heavy rainfall amounts from that line of thunderstorms that passed to the north of Winnipeg last evening..

Balmoral (CWB) ... 87 mm (N of Stonewall)
    Teulon (CWB) ... 63 mm
    Petersfield (CWB).... 58 mm
    Teulon (MB-AG)....... 58 mm

Readings are from Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) and Manitoba Ag (MB-AG) weather stations.

Meanwhile, another 20-40 mm of rain over southwest Manitoba yesterday, while RRV and SE MB got off relatively unscathed with about 5 mm or less.. Pattern remains unstable over the next few days with models continuing to target SW Manitoba with heavy convective rainfall. How much more can those poor folks take?
