Storm system over northern plains to bring rain to southeast Manitoba..

A strong storm system over southeastern South Dakota will track through Minnesota over the next 24 hours bringing a wide swath of rain over the North Dakota and northern Minnesota. The heaviest rain is expected to fall near or just south of the US border with totals of 25 to 50 mm by Wednesday evening. Some of this rain will spread into southeast Manitoba tonight into Wednesday with 15-25 mm possible over the southern RRV and southeast Manitoba (Steinbach, Sprague, etc) There will be a sharp cutoff on the northern extent of this rain shield.. which will likely set up roughly along the TransCanada highway. Little or no rain is expected north of this line, while areas to the south will see some precipitation, heavier as you go towards the international border. Winnipeg will lie on the dividing line with little or no rain expected north of the city.. and perhaps 5-10 mm just to the south Wednesday into Wednesday night.

  1. As unsettled as it's been.. Winnipeg has actually been fairly dry so far this June. I've only had 40 mm this month, airport 34 mm and only 20-25 mm over the south end of Winnipeg (Whyte Ridge/St Vital).. Normal June rainfall is 90 mm in Winnipeg so we're actually running a little shy of normal this month. The bulk of the rain these past weeks has fallen to our north and west with most of the weather systems. I'm hoping we can dodge another bullet with this next system with most of the rain falling to our south and east..

  2. Ya know.... I really don't mind unsettled conditions if there are plenty of thunderstorms to watch.Yet this year we have been on the far northern edge of all systems which yields rain showers with a few rumbles of thunder. We need some hot and humid conditions for the big storms. The only thing is that there are so many places that have been swamped this year with heavy rain, you wish of no more rain for the farmers!

  5. Looks like the rain is moving in a bit quicker that EC thought. They changed their forecast as such!

  6. Interesting to see our dewpoint dropping while the rain shield spreads north towards the city.. a real battle between dry air in the low levels and moisture aloft. That may delay or lighten the rain here a bit compared to what radar is showing. Not much in the way of accumulations so far according to CWB weatherbug network.. with about 0.5 to 1.5 mm south and east of St Agathe.

  7. Rob,you confirmed exactly what I was thinking today. We've had tons of cool, cloudy, damp weather but we've dodged the heavy stuff.... so far. My family is in the Yorkton area and the rainfall there is monumental, 182 mm in the last 90 days and a surplus of 234 mm over the last year. We're at a measly 163 mm over.

  8. Well.. so much for dodging this one. Rain spread in faster and further north than models were indicating.. with significantly more rain over portions of southeast Manitoba overnight. Steinbach area has been hit the hardest so far with a good 40 mm as of 6 am thanks to a narrow east-west band of heavier rain from Steinbach through Rosenort (likely will see over 50 mm through this region)

Winnipeg has seen about 5 mm in the north end so far to 15-20 mm along the south Perimeter. 9 mm at my place and counting.. Welcome to summer!

  9. So much for prescience, yesterday, my brother headed back to Calgary via Saskatoon (Yorkton) to avoid the washouts on the TransCanada.
