August was another cooler than normal month in Winnipeg.. the 9th consecutive month below normal. The average temperature for the month at YWG airport was 17.3C, or 1.2C below the normal August average of 18.5C. This comes on top of a very cool July (16.5C) and cool June (15.6C), with a 3 month summer average of only 16.5C, or nearly 2C below the normal summer average of 18.3C. This puts it just behind the summers of 1985 and 1883 as the 7th coolest summer in Winnipeg since records began in 1873.Looking at the 3 month temperature graph for the "summer" of 2009, one can see the only warmth was a 2 week stretch in June and a 4 day hot spell in mid August (the 33C reading on Aug 27th is erroneous) Cool weather dominated most of the summer, especially July which did not break the 30C mark.
August now marks the 9th consecutive month below normal in Winnipeg.. the longest such streak since another 9 month stretch between Dec 1949 and August 1950.

I suspect a second record, Rainfall --12 month moving avg came, to an end in August. For the 12 months ending July 31st almost 700mm rain fell in Wpg. Although we wouldn't call it a green shoot about 25mm less fell this Aug.

I recomputed the summer average using 17.3C as Winnipeg's official August mean temperature. That puts the 3 month summer average up to 16.5C making it the 7th coolest summer, not the 6th coolest as stated earlier. Note that these stats are still unofficial until all figures are in.

ReplyDeleteEC predicting a record breaking 36C today in Medicine Hat! With 850 temps of 26-28C progged over SE AB and SW SK this afternoon, that area will certainly be the hot spot in Canada today.

30C forecast for Winnipeg for Saturday, and things are looking favourable for us to hit the mark. 850 temps of 18C moving into the RRV with low level winds swinging into the SW which would add some additional downslope heating off the Pembina escarpment. 30C looks likely on Sunday as well with 850 temps rising to 20C but we get more of a southerly valley wind. Nice way to end the summer! Now if only these pesky mosquitoes would get the heck out of here!
