Here are a couple of video clips showing tornadoes from southern MB the past two evenings. The first clip is the F4 Elie tornado of June 22nd from start to finish. The second clip shows a huge tornado over southwest MB last evening that touched down near Pipestone and travelled southeast, south of Hartney and north of Boissevain and Killarney. This thing was an absolute monster that luckily stayed mainly over open fields. West of Hartney, the damage path was 1.8 km wide! If it had struck a community, we would have had a second straight F4 on our hands (maybe even an F5) which would have caused a lot of damage, and probably a lot of fatalities. Scary stuff..

Monster tornado near Pipestone, MB - June 23, 2007
The video of the pipestone tornado is amazing. You can actually see small vorticies rotating within the circulation of the tornado. This video would probably be useful for tornado research?
ReplyDeleteA cool front snuck thru Winnipeg this morning...but it looks to have stalled. The front may even back a little as a low in the dakotas gets organized and moves north. Even if it dosent, a fairly strong low level jet will advect warmth and moisture above the surface ... setting the stage for strong nocturnal thunderstorms tonite with possibly torrential rain.
The american model advertises a big push of cold air behind the low ... it brings in sub zero at 850 mb ... thats ridiculous for late June! Thursday morning looks to be very cool with a light northwest flow. If the model is right, we are in for a shock after bathing in warm humid air.

It is an amazing piece of video.. that tornado rivals anything they see down in the U.S. - an absolute monster. When I called up the Foxwarren radar, the cell associated with this beast screamed tornado with a classic kidney shaped supercell, all by itself on the south end of several storms sucking up all that heat and moisture from the south. Minot radar also captured it beautifully with a strong rotational velocity couplet associated. It was as classic a tornadic supercell as you will ever see around these parts.
ReplyDeleteEC rated it as an F3, however it probably was because the main part of the tornado didn't hit anything to rate damage, or it hit as it was at a weaker stage. I strongly suspect this monster was an easy F4, or even F5 had the core directly hit some structures (very lucky it didn't)

I always thought this strong a twister was strictly a Kansas phenomenon. It's an eye-opener for sure.
ReplyDeleteWell, sounds like the CBC thought EC was tardy issuing tornado warnings. The guy who's been doing the media stuff lately will probably sample the downside of media exposure.
Retired meteo Jay Anderson touched on the lack of funding and bureaucracy at EC.
