Finally looking like winter..

The storm system that brought a mix of snow and rain to much of the Red River valley Monday is now slowly tracking into Minnesota this morning, with colder air and snow wrapping around the system across southern Manitoba. Rain overnight changed to snow early this morning in Winnipeg, and will continue through the day with 4 to 8 cm possible by evening. Temperatures will hold steady near the freezing mark all day with northerly winds gusting to 50 km/h. Road conditions will once again be challenging, especially this morning.. so expect another SLOW commute today and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. Periods of snow will continue tonight with another 2 or 3 cm possible before snow tapers to flurries Wednesday.  Temperatures will gradually be cooling off over the next several days with highs below freezing.. so it looks like the covering of snow we get today into tomorrow will finally be sticking around for the winter. After the warmest November on record, it looks like winter is finally here!

  1. Hey Rob. WN is calling for another storm Sunday into Monday. Look like a possibility? Thanks for all your updates by the way. Really appreciate it.

    1. Jeff.. lots of uncertainty with next storm system early next week. All 3 main models have different solutions on it.. one brings something through us Monday, another Tuesday, and another misses us altogether. So, looks like another system brewing for early next week (tracking somewhere across northern Plains or southern Prairies), but too early yet for more specifics.

  2. Models still having problems trying to figure out how that next weather system will evolve next week.. but all guidance is consistent that we will be turning much colder by mid to late week next week, even perhaps going below normal which would be the first time in over 6 weeks and quite a shock to the system. A storm system is forecast to track across the southern Prairies early next week, with much colder air filtering in behind across Alberta and Sask early in the week, with the cold airmass reaching Winnipeg by late week. Highs could be around -15C by Dec 10th with lows of -25C.. which we haven't come close to seeing since last winter. So be prepared for a big change in the weather next week as our abnormally mild pattern of the past 6 weeks comes to an end..

    1. GFS and ECMWF show system tracking across southern MB next Tuesday with 10-15 cm of snow possible for Winnipeg.. while Canadian GDPS continues to show a weaker storm staying south of the border, with no snow over us. Given the depth of the cold air coming in behind this sytem, I think a stronger storm tracking further north is more likely.. so I'm leaning towards the GFS/ECMWF solutions for the time being. We'll see if there's better model agreement in the next day or two..
