Another unsettled weekend ahead.. showers and thunderstorms likely, locally heavy at times

Another weekend, another shot of unsettled weather coming up for southern Manitoba as a warmer and more humid airmass spreads over the eastern Prairies, while periodic weather systems trigger showers and thunderstorms Friday through Sunday. Much like last weekend, this upcoming weekend won't be a total washout with sunny, dry stretches at times. However, occasional showers and thunderstorms are likely each day, especially at night with the potential for some severe thunderstorms.. along with locally heavy rainfall. This will not be welcome news for those hoping to dry out from the wet weather over the past couple of weeks which has produced over a month's worth of rain in Winnipeg within a week. Cooler weather is expected to move in next week behind this unsettled weather pattern.

  1. Pleased to report that although the rain induced red river has reached record levels for this date, it hasn't entered our parking lot yet. The same cant be said for the Pony Coral. If you have any influence with the rain gods Rob please request a pause....

  2. The city of Winnipeg has issued a rainfall warning. Is this serious?

  3. EC issued the rainfall warning for Winnipeg and the RRV. Looking at locally heavy showers and thunderstorms tonight into Sunday with general amounts of 30-60 mm likely and local amounts up to 100 mm possible. Oh joy! Just what we need!

    1. The first of several rounds this weekend! Got up to 30C at my place this afternoon with a 21C dewpoint.. very juicy airmass primed for torrential rainfall at any time.

  5. Well one day into the weekend has any location reached 100mm yet?
Driving south on Main St at Portage near 330 it seemed like the towers were knocking it out of the air. Do they have any effect?
They stand about 300feet high or so?

  6. Hey Rob,

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this blog!

The low producing this rain over the Canada Day weekend has been stunning to say the least.

It would be interesting to take a closer look at how it developed and formed, so I was wondering if you know where (or even if!) it is possible to find (or get!) archived Surface Analysis charts from EC. It would be really neat if these could be obtained along with the 250Mb, 500Mb, 700Mb, 850Mb charts--and perhaps even the Graphical Forecast Areas, TAFs, and METARS.

I did find a place where I can get archived Radar Images, but so far looking for any archived weather maps has proved fruitless!

Do you know where/how these archives could be obtained?

    Thanks Rob!

    1. Anonymous..

You can get surface and upper air charts back for about a week from the UQAM Meteocenter site at..

      http://meteocentre.com/analyses/map_upper.php?lang=en&map=500&area=na

But they only go back a week or so. For upper charts before then, you'd have to go to other sites that have archive images, such as Unisys or SPC. Not sure about where to access archived GFAs, METARS, or TAFs..
