Season's Greetings from Rob's Obs!

Here's wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season, and a wonderful new year in 2013!

2012 was sure an interesting year weatherwise over southern Manitoba and much of North America, with an exceptionally mild winter to start, record March heat wave, warmest 12 month period on record, and a snowy end.  Let's see what surprises Mother Nature has in store for 2013! Happy holidays!

  1. Thank you Rob, we hope you have wonderful holidays as well!

2012 was full of extremes and I'm sure looking forward to what 2013 will bring.

  2. Was shocked to see Brandon reporting -35C this morning.. but upon further inspection, temperature looks like it's off by 10C. All neighbouring stations, including Weatherbug and MAFRI sites are around the -25C mark. Temperature at YBR went from -22C at 1 am to -34C at 2 am and has stayed in the -30's since. I'm calling observer error on that one..

  3. yeah and even EC didn't issue windchill warnings despite the station showing wind chills close to -50 overnight. I'm guessing EC knows of the issue.. now let's just hope it doesn't end up in the climate data.

  4. 8 obs and counting of observer error, one after the other?! I'm guessing it's equipment failure and the observer doesn't know any better (speaking from experience working with some of these people), or someone got into the eggnog a little early.

  9. Brandon officially recorded a low of -39c yesterday, which is completely spurious. Most likely -29c.

  12. MOSCOW — As temperatures plummet to -50 Celsius in some parts of Russia, thousands have been evacuated from their homes in the country’s Far East and Siberia. More than 120 people have died from the severe cold -- at least seven in the last 24 hours.

Meteorologists say the country is experiencing one of its coldest winters in decades.
In the Far East region of Magadan, 300 kilometers of roads remain blocked by heavy snow. Plows and machines can not reach those roads to clear them. In some places, snow is as much as five meters deep.

Irina Bryarkina lives in the Tyva region of Siberia where temperatures have been -40 C for several days. It is so cold that many heating pipes have frozen and thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes.

Bryarkina says the situation is not good. She says they’ve got nothing. It’s good that there’s lots of snow, she says, so that they can gather it and melt it for water. She goes on to say that temperatures insude her flat are below freezing too.

Emergency services in the area have evacuated many residents to local schools and hospitals.

Aria Dagbaldai says the shelters are a welcome relief. She says she has spent two nights in a school where conditions are good and warm and there is even warm food.

Temperatures are expected to warm in the next few days but not by much. Meanwhile, emergency workers say they are doing their best to fix the broken pipes and restore central heating in Tyva.

  13. Wow...models showing major stratospheric warming event coming towards Alaska and the pole in about 10 days....lookout, this likely means some major cold air coming our way mid to late January.

Rob, what are your thoughts on this?

  14. Looks like we are going to get a little snow this evening. Anyone know how much is expected?

  15. Montreal just had its snowiest day EVER with 45.6 cm on the 27th. They broke the old record of 43.2 cm from the "Storm of the century".

    Insane...

  22. Greetings gang!

Back from holidays in southern Ontario.. started with a green Christmas, then had a nice 20 cm snowstorm Boxing Day.

Light dusting possible for us tomorrow, otherwise looks pretty quiet for the next few days. I'm liking the big warmup models are advertising by next weekend. Happy New Year!
