Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain hitting southern MB again..

Unsettled weather continues over southern MB today with more locally heavy rain, and severe thunderstorms. Heavy rain has set up just west and northwest of Winnipeg with local rainfall amounts of 40-65 mm reported. This band will be coming through Winnipeg this evening with more heavy rain likely.. which will compound local flooding concerns due to the heavy rains over the past day or so. Further south and east, severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds are possible over the southern Red River valley and southeast Manitoba this evening.

The downpour begins - 4.8mm in the last 4 minutes.

  5. 1/2 the weekend gone and only the greatest two poll categories still in the running.

I suspect only one of those remaining by 7pm (>75mm)

  6. Another 21 mm in this evening's downpour (so far, with more to come).. 46 mm for the day, 83 mm past 36 hours, monthly total up to 158 mm now. Boy, did Mother Nature make up for that dry April and then some!

  7. About an inch so far (more or less). First time in my life my front yard gets full of water !!

  8. RR is now rising at a rate exceeding 8 inches (20cm) per hour. At half this rate (10cm/hr) it could exceed this years ice assisted flood crest before 8am tomorrow.

  9. Omg Rob, will this ever stop! More developping! My road is underwater. I've lived here 10 years, never seen this much flooding!

  10. jewels.. I keep thinking the heaviest rain is over, and then radar keeps showing strong cells redeveloping to our west. I've had 30 mm since 6:30 pm, over 55 mm for the day and looks like we may still see another 10-20 mm tonight. Crazy stuff! Hopefully we get a break tomorrow with little or no additional rain in the wrap-around.. we can't take anymore! This is getting into serious flooding territory.

  11. Wow, it's like a dream Rob, crazy!! =D
i've gotten over 60.3 mm since 6:30 PM. So about 130 mm of rain since yesterday night!!!! That's nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wow.. 60 mm this evening?! That's crazy. No wonder you have flooding! What part of the city are you in jewels? What type of rain gauge are you using?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I live in south St-Vital. We've seemed to have been hit hard in this end this evening!
My rain gauge is not ideal, but is alright. Not sure what it's called, but from John Deer company or something. With the east wind today though, I believe a little water blew from the roof this evening, so the amount might be a little over the actual, but not significant.

  14. 40 mm past hour at another St Vital station (http://www.mts.net/~dpatrick/) so yes, the south end of the city is getting pounded!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ya no kidding. But how's that ditch of yours Rob? Is it handling this?

  16. Here's something you don't see that often, (I attribute the error to automation). At 8:20 PM at CYWG the temp was 15.0 deg C, dewpoint was 15.5 deg C with a relative humidity of 99%. Perhaps the automats got the temp & dewpoint reversed. Enough with the rain already! My next house WILL NOT have a basement!

  17. I don't want to live in Manitoba or any part of Canada except for Vancouver anymore because of series of bad weather. I have to go to California or Vancouver and not return to Winnipeg until fall to enjoy great weather.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ok this no longer fun anymore. Its great watching these storms form and blow in, but this one is now become worrisome. When my basement starts flooding its no longer fun. Enough with this biblical rain fall !!

    ReplyDelete
  19. St. Vital here also, streets flooded all over again.

  20. Luckily no ditches on my street.. but a quick drive around the neighbourhood reveals most ditches are 1/2 full or more, with several overtopping into yards. Water over the road on parts of Wilkes due to overtopped ditches. General rainfall amounts of 50-80 mm across the city today.. that HPC prog showing a 80 mm bullseye over Winnipeg worked out after all!

I'm now up to 100 mm of rain since yesterday morning.. I've had enough thanks. You can shut it off anytime (as radar shows another band of heavy rain off to our west..)

  21. Those storms in southern North Dakota aren't coming here are they?
Maybe not Winnipeg, but southeast of here?

  22. Things should be winding down shortly for Winnipeg (finally). LLJ starts drifting east and convection should focus over SE Manitoba and NW Ontario. Another jet sets up around northern periphery of upper low supporting rain for central interlake, but locally dry slot should be working in.

Fly in the ointment is disturbance over Nebraska/ S Dakota. It is supporting another large area of convection... this impulse will track up along the front slowing its eastward progress. Will have to see where main precip band stalls out but most likely it will be over Kenora to Fargo.

With this burst of rain, I have broken through the 100mm mark (Friday and Saturday combined). I've have 55mm so far today and 181mm, and rising, for the month. My sump pump is getting a good work out.

  24. Hi

Been busy with work and everythingn else of late so sorry for not posting as much. Besides..I much prefer the winter weather to summer. It was miserable here today in GF 93 at the airport and 90 at NWS office in town.

Does look like GFS has had good idea in bringing up this second shot of pcpn into ern nd/nw mn and se manitoba tonight into early sunday. I hope it does miss winnipeg to the southeast which it should.

By the way...was wondering with all the basement flooding reports...I assume most folks have a sump pump if you have a basement house. I have a basement house and we have one with a backup. It goes off every 1 min or so in hvy rain.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yikes! I'm ready for this to stop now. My front and back lawn are both totally saturated sponges :) Basement is getting a bit of water, and so is my crawlspace.

Here's to another night of swapping out towels and shopvac'ing :)!

    - In Westwood, St James.

  26. Sump pumps were not mandatory here until approx 1980. Most houses built before then relied on a backup valve installed by the homeowner. In something like this not a very good solution.

In Charleswood for example Houses off of Scotswood north of Bettsworth built from 1976 to 79 used Backup valves...Compulsory S/pumps were installed on houses built a few years later a block away off Hunterspoint.

  27. Just got back to the city from the interlake to a flooded basement and yard, what a sinking feeling. Just like to point out that this is the most rain ive ever seen accumulate in this short time period. Coming back I noticed most fields are flooded which will affect greatly the crops this year and in the intrelake ditches were overflowing everywhere. This will take a toll on most people.

  28. Just a quick note to say my little back yard creek aka RR is now half a meter above my parking spot with little or no remaining protection.. It was all removed several days ago.
Up a meter plus since 1am today.

One more by this time tomorrow I'm guessing would float us away.

  29. Well, that's the last of the heavy stuff.. finally. Another quick 3 mm in this last burst, for a whopping 66 mm total today (over 40 mm this evening alone), and 103 mm since yesterday. We may see some light rain in the hangback overnight into Sunday morning, but amounts should be light. A much needed break from this heavy rain..

And Dan, yes, houses in Winnipeg have sump pumps.. it's in the design code. Only the oldest homes would not have one, and even then, they would probably have one installed if they were smart. My sump pump is going off every minute of so trying to keep up with all this rain.. But even with sump pumps, some houses are susceptible to basement flooding during excessive rainfall events due to water flowing through window wells or cracks in the foundation, especially if they have poor drainage.

  30. Thanks Rob and everyone for that info...

Just spoke to Police chief and Emergency manager at Hallock MN and 2.50 inches of rain there in past 2 hours and street flooding observed. so your flooding concerns are starting to shift down to us. Though hopefully not as severe. best of luck to everyone and their houses. I know that having a basement house or even a split level in times of hvy rain is worrisome.

  31. Dan..

I see your NEXRAD is showing 4-6" rainfall totals near Pembina.. any reports to verify those numbers?

    ReplyDelete
  32. As bad as precip totals are for us in Winnipeg... I think they may pale in comparison to totals from SE Manitoba and NW Ontario by tomorrow morning. Enormous area of heavy to moderate rain over Whiteshell and Kenora region moving off, but line of convection along front and LLJ has completely stalled from a Jamestown ND to Hallock MN to La Broquerie MB line. Given lack of motion and amount of upstream returns.. we may be looking at historic rainfall totals (no hype). Only saving grace is that LLJ is depicted as weakening after about 3/4 AM as energy consolidates around upper low further north... we'll see. Anyway.. this will become a case study for classic heavy rain set-ups (or at least it should).

The area between Grand Forks and Hallock NE into SE Manitoba may well end up with over 200-300 mm for the month of May.. unreal.

    ReplyDelete
  33. And this time yesterday Daniel you may have been given to understatement ... PS.. dissapointingly there is no mention of heavy rain potential in today's focn45.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I hope the lack of mention doesn't produce another 50-80

  35. Rob -- regarding Pembina -- nothing official. We do have a cooperative observer in Pembina who does report most mornings.

Unofficially....there is a MN DOT RWIS site at St Vincent 1.8 mi south of the border on the Kittson county side and its precip accumulator was up to 4.30 inches. These often run a bit high though.

We did speak a few times with the EM and police chief in Hallock MN and he estimated 2.5 inches there...but they did not receive the worst of it.

I am back home now...got off work at midnight

  36. NWS GFK has a report of a whopping 6.73" (170 mm) of rain from Pembina since yesterday. Extensive flooding. Emerson had 93 mm up to midnight, with more likely after that. Will list more reports in a new post shortly..
