January to end on windy mild note..
It's been a cold month.. with January averaging almost 3 degrees below normal. But the month will end on a mild note Saturday as a low pressure system tracking through the Interlake region draws mild air into southern MB. This system will push a warm front across southern MB later today into this evening bringing some light snow and even a risk of some brief freezing rain by midnight. Temperatures will begin to climb tonight as the warm air pushes in, reaching the freezing mark by morning in the Red River valley. On Saturday, mild conditions will prevail through midday with temperatures possibly reaching +1 or +2C under partly cloudy skies, before strong northwest winds of 50 to 70 km/h develop by afernoon, bringing cooler air into the area by the end of the day.

ReplyDeleteDo you see the potential for Winnipeg and red river valley to get into the very strong winds of 90 km/h?
Progs indicate low level winds of 40-45 knots coming in this afternoon, which would translate to gusts of 70-80 km/h over us. Current analysis shows wind gusts are generally in the 35-40 kt range over southern SK (60-70 km/h) but I suspect these will pick up to the 70-90 km/h range there as the cold advection deepens. Surface low is currently at 987 mb near Swan River which is a little deeper than the models had it this morning, so we'll see if this translates to slightly stronger wind gusts for us. We'll have to see what the upper soundings show this morning, but right now, I don't think we'll be seeing 90 km/h gusts in the Red River valley. But it will be quite windy with gusts of 70-80 km/h developing by afternoon. This will briefly get us up to the +2C mark early this afternoon before temperatures fall off as the cold advection sets in. Should be an interesting end to an otherwise boring month!

ReplyDeleteAny snow in the next little while? It has been prety dry for a long time. Any indication of a change in patterns bringing snow or maybe some storms?
No change to a stormier pattern that I can see over southern MB, at least in the next 10 days. February is usually our quietest winter month with the least amount of snow.. so typically, we don't see a lot of storms this month. We'll have to wait and see if March and April bring a stormier pattern..
ReplyDeleteFoxwarren doppler radar showing 60-65 knot winds (100 km/h) at 2500 ft above surface, with about 40-45 kt winds making it to the surface (70-80 km/h) Wind warning has been extended into southern Red River valley.
ReplyDeleteOfficially a January thaw here at 11:19 a.m. this morning, temperature is +0.1C!
ReplyDeleteTemperatures have popped up to +5C in Portage and +1C in Starbuck.. watch those temperatures pop above freezing in Winnipeg by the noon hour as we pick up those gusty west winds.
ReplyDeleteWarm air has mixed down at airport and not yet at the forks (-2 C)... interesting. Already a record breaking 7 C at Grand Forks deeper in the warm sector and SW flow.
ReplyDeleteI highly doubt such strong wind gusts will mix down into the valley. The highest winds with a westerly component tend to 'blow over top' the red river basin.
Pressure down to 984 mb here.. my lowest since a 981 mb reading last June. A band of wet snowflurries moving through now associated with cold front.. watch for temps to start falling this afternoon. Nice to have strong winds and mild temps for a change!
ReplyDeleteWell that was a short lived warm spell if I ever saw one... The downtown may not have even crested above zero (or for a few minutes only before the snow). Was that bright banding on the RADAR as the snow melted in the warm layer above the surface? Too bad we could not get a bit of rain here ..but I guess those colder temps aloft are already crashing in .. sigh.
ReplyDeleteThe winds where I live (St James) are very strong!
ReplyDeleteMy apartment is literally rumbling from the winds!
Even a tree branch from a pine tree got ripped off!!!!
I live behind another apartment building to my southwest and this really accelerating the winds around the buildings

ReplyDeleteLooks like the wind knocked out the temperture at the Wpg Airport as of 2:00pm it is not available.
ReplyDeleteSorry Daniel didn't mean to repeat you.
ReplyDeletewind warning now expanded to Winnipeg and South eastern Manitoba!
ReplyDeletei have some wind DAMAGE at my place!!!
ReplyDeleteRoofing shingles came off our apartment and tree limbs blown down!
Gusting 89 km/h at the airport as of 3 pm.. looks like we got those 90 km/h gusts after all! Very turbulent out there.. wind drops off, then comes right back with howling gusts. Wouldn't want to be landing at YWG airport this afternoon!
ReplyDeleteThese winds are just to strong for my liking!
ReplyDeleteI live in a high rise building and all I can hear is the building creak and rumble under these winds!

ReplyDeleteI just live North of the city and those wind gusts are easy 100kmh. Nothing to measure them by except for the bowing in of the garage doors.
ReplyDeleteHow much longer till they ease off?
