A frosty night coming up..
An unseasonably cool airmass has pushed into Southern MB today, and with clear skies and diminishing winds tonight, that will set the stage for widespread frost to develop over most areas. Temperatures are expected to drop into the zero to -3C range over much of southern MB tonight, with the exception of areas near the MB lakes, as well as downtown Winnipeg where overnight temperatures will remain above freezing. So take in those tender plants tonight, or cover them up if you can. Much nicer weather is on tap Tuesday and Wednesday with sunny skies and warmer temperatures.

Wow.. my dewpoint has dropped to -5C here in Charleswood.. very dry air moving in. Looks like a hard freeze tonight with arctic high building in overnight.
ReplyDeleteMy dewpoint is hanging around the 1 degree mark, but I guess it will fall tonight as the high builds in.
ReplyDeleteIn other news we could see another severe weather risk later this week into the weekend. The current GFS run shows the possibility of a 3 day in a row severe weather "outbreak". This will definately be something to watch.
Rob...have you heard any further information regarding the tornado last night, is EC investigating?
I just noticed that the temperature in Sudbury dropped from 18 degrees to 8 degrees in one hours, OUCH!
ReplyDeleteIt is only 8C and the severe tstorm watch continues, interesting.
And it's SNOWING north of Sudbury in Timmins with a temperature of 0C.. now that's a cold front!
ReplyDeleteAs for that tornado.. I don't think EC will be investigating it. It didn't do any damage that we're aware of, and it was fairly brief by the sounds of it. Investigations are generally reserved for significant tornadoes that do a lot of damage or cause injuries/deaths.

ReplyDeleteInteresting convection just south of us. A shortwave disturbance is producing a very narrow but intense line of precip right thru Grand Forks. The line appears to be nearly stationary... could be very heavy precip in a localized area. Surprising because of all the moisture return and cloud cover limiting instability.
Looks like some rain showers are starting to form to the south of Winnipeg and could be hitting us around the supper hour!!
ReplyDeleteThen we will have to wait after dark for the thunderstorms!!!!
Looks like South-Eastern Manitoba could be in for some more storms on Saturday. The weather situation looks very similar to last Sunday, so I would expect a few severe thunderstorms again.
ReplyDeleteThey made 3 adjustments to the forecast for tonight and it's only 9:30 p.m
ReplyDeleteLOL
hi , just like to say thanks for your wed cam, i live in the uk but have family in Winnipeg, like to see what weather you are having, thanks
ReplyDeletenever seen people on the wed cam in the garden
ReplyDeleteAll I can say...WOW!
ReplyDeleteAbout 20 or so minutes ago, a thunderstorm developed over my area of the city. The wow is the fact that it produced a lightning bolt that hit a tree about less than 30 ft away from my house! The crack that followed and the 15 sec. or so of wall shaking was just awesome!
The interesting thing about this that I wanted to note-right before the lightning and subsequent thunder, my sensor was detecting a temperature of 10.6 degrees. Right afterwards, the temperature rose to 23.9 degrees! It's still around there, but slowly coming down.
Talk about rapid heating from the air expansion the lightning caused!
That is interesting...Go outside now before it cools off again...haha.
ReplyDeleteI can see dark clouds rolling towards Steinbach. From looking at the RADAR that storms looks to continue intensifying. Lightning detection indicates this storm is very electric (as Jon just noted). The atmosphere appears to be more unstable the farther South you go, so I would expect the storms to keep getting worse for awhile longer. The wind shear profiles and helicity are similar to last weekend so I should get something interesting.
I'll keep you posted..Cloud tops are at 30,000ft and continue to rise as of 11:20.
Is that a wall cloud I see on the horizon...
ReplyDeleteInteresting stuff, Scott. More storms are firing behind these ones, so there could be more ti come!
ReplyDeleteAnother interesting thing I've noticed: In Winnipeg itself, storms seem to have been training over the the Lagemodiere Boulevard area for the last hour now. If this continues, there could be some flash flooding there.
Temperature is down to 20. 6 here now :(.
I can see a fairly defined storm approaching from the North-West. Will this turn into a quasi-stationary event?
ReplyDeleteThe storm appears to be holding around the 30,000ft mark for height, and appears to be maintaining its strength. I am watching the NWS Grand Forks RADAR very closely to see if any rotation develops. The lightning detection sites in Southern Manitoba are starting to go crazy! I would suspect this in combination with other factors indicates a strengthening storm.
I might be jumping the gun on this one, but is there a squall line forming in the Interlake??
ReplyDeleteI thought those interlake cells looked interesting too.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if they can get developed enough we could have a line of cells go through such as those that developed in SE SK yesterday.
