Another scorcher - but relief on the way

It's another scorcher over the Red River valley, with 1 pm temperatures of 33C in Winnipeg and a humidex of 45C.. the steamiest day of the heat wave so far. But relief is on the way as a cold front approaches from the west. As of 1 pm, the front was just about through Brandon with showers and thunderstorms west of the front. Temperatures drop significantly behind the front with values near 20C near the SK border as of 1 pm. The front should be moving through Winnipeg later this afternoon with noticeably cooler conditions and some rain moving in this evening.

  2. The Humidex is 46 in Winnipeg now...the record is 46.1 set on June 27, 1996. Dew point down at the Hallock, MN airport is 27 right now with an air temp of 34.

  3. current obs at the airport as of 2:41 pm show 34.5 Celsius over 25.1 Td, thus giving a 46.84 Humidex value. I think we have the record here in CYWG.

  7. With a humidex like that, you need a pool...the wet and cool kind. Relief on the way...down here in Lancaster, I am shooting for 13 (56F) on Friday morning. People will finally get good news when they visit my local forecast web site.

  8. An absolute sauna out there today.. numerous dewpoints in the 25-28C range. Winnipeg at 35 over 25 for a 48 humidex. Carman at an incredible 53C humidex thanks to a 30C dewpoint, which I find hard to believe but may be a local effect. My station recorded a dewpoint of 27.2C, the highest ever recorded at my site since I installed it in the summer of 2001. My heat index was a sweltering 47C, also a new site record. One for the record books!

  9. We've had awfully high dew points in Kittson County, MN this past month, but we had about 3 months worth of rain in June, so that may have something to do with the dew points in Carman if they got a similar deluge in recent weeks. Dew point hit 27 in Hallock today. The heat index here was 45, but the Humidex would be higher.

  10. I think the record humidex for Canada was 52C in Windsor (June 1953) If that 30C dewpoint checks out, then it looks like Carman may have established a new record high humidex reading for Canada. Note however that the MB agriculture site in Carman is recording a dewpoint of "only" 26C.. so I'm not sure how accurate that 30C value is.

One thing's for sure, this is Winnipeg's highest ever humidex.. 48C beating our previous record 46C in June 1996.

  11. The dew point readings in Hallock seem to be accurate...they have been running higher than some other areas recently, but they were not doing that before the rains turned all the fields into swamps. I spent 6 years in Lousiana and never saw temperature and dew point combinations any worse than what I saw today. The consolation here is that we know it will be short lived.

  12. You're wrong about Canadian record being set in Carman, Manitoba because Castlegar had a humidex of 53.4 back on July 14th, 1961. Just sayin'.

    Read'em and weep... http://climate.weatheroffice.gc.ca/climate_normals/results_e.html?stnID=1105&lang=e&dCode=1&StationName=CASTLEGAR&SearchType=Contains&province=ALL&provBut=&month1=0&month2=12

    1. That value of 53.4C in Castlegar is likely erroneous. The dewpoint shot up from a relatively stable 17C at 11 am to 29C at 2 pm as temperatures climbed to 35.6C. Just doesn't happen in the valleys of BC.. highly suspect value that I would discount.
