January to end on milder note with some snow..

January 2012 will be ending much like it began.. with temperatures well above normal. Today's sunshine and "cold" weather (which is actually still a bit above normal) will give way to increasing clouds this afternoon as a warm front approaches from the west. A band of snow ahead of the front (see morning radar image left) will push into Winnipeg/RRV this evening with 2 -4 cm of snow possible tonight. Brisk southeast winds will accompany the snow with some drifting and local blowing snow possible. Snow and wind will taper off by Monday morning with cloudy and milder conditions forecast during the day.

Another band of precipitation is expected by Monday night, with some more snow likely (perhaps another 2-4 cm) along with a risk of freezing rain. (See 48 hr precipitation graph left above from SpotWx.com showing output from last night's RGEM model)

Temperatures will continue well above normal Tuesday with highs near freezing. January 2012 will end up as Winnipeg's 3rd warmest January on record, with a chance of second place honours depending on how mild we get over the next couple of days.

  1. Snow spreading over southwest MB this afternoon.. should gradually move into Winnipeg/RRV mid to late evening.. Bulk of snow looks like it will slip to the southwest of Winnipeg but we should get clipped with 1 or 2 cm overnight.

  2. Hey rob, I hope you don't mind but where do you get the radar images from, that you use on your post?

  3. Mike.....I think that only EC employees can access those radar images.

  4. Man do those Radar pictures look good and they seem to look over a lot larger area then currently available to us. It looks like the US radars are woven into the Canadian system.

  5. Mike..

Those radar images are from EC's servers, and unfortunately are currently password protected for only authorized users. I think that particular radar image is downloaded to the following website without a password, but I'm not positive..

  6. My guess for tonight I don't think we will get even a cm of snow. I think closer to a dusting.

  8. Only a skiff of snow here last night.. maybe 0.5 cm or so. Next batch of precipitation developing to our NW and will track sewd into Winnipeg/RRV by evening. Models have been trending a little higher on the pcpn amounts with this system past couple of runs with potential for 5-10 cm through Interlake into southeast MB tonight into Tuesday morning, with perhaps 2-4 cm for Winnipeg.

Snow could start off as some freezing rain as temperatures aloft climb above 0C. This would cut down on snowfall amounts, but would make for more slippery conditions.

  9. Only 0.5 cm at your place? I measure 1.7cm here in St. Bonifice as an average of about 15 measurements all over my property.

Melted to 1.3mm water equivalent giving an SLR of 13:1.

  10. Brad.. snowfall was tough to measure as the light snow drifted quite a bit, with lots of bare areas, and 1-2 cm elsewhere. But on average, looked like less than a cm at my place..

  11. Mike was inquiring about radar images. Unfortunately public access to EC radar images is very limited, with only very basic and crude imagery from the Weatheroffice website. Fortunately, there are other places to view more useful EC radar data from other sources, including Weather Underground, Weather Network and AccuWeather, which have better map backgrounds, zooming capabilities and pcpn type colour coding available. (yes, American sources provide better Canadian radar imagery than EC does.. go figure) All these links are available on my radar webpage. Click on my name for the radar imagery product from Accuweather, which nicely shows the next batch of precipitation over Riding Mtns heading our way, possibly as a mix of freezing rain, snow or ice pellets.

  13. daniel.. Haven't heard of anything, but MB highways is reporting several highways as ice covered and slippery from Gladstone to the Sk border, including the Yellowhead. Looks like pcpn is falling as snow further north over Riding Mtn and Dauphin area..
