Chilly but dry for Halloween.. snow moves in to start off November along with below normal temps

After a blustery and cold Monday with gusty winds and occasional flurries, things will settle down somewhat Tuesday as a ridge of high pressure crosses southern MB. That will give lighter winds much of the day along with generally fair conditions.. so no rain or snow to contend with for Halloween (unlike last year which saw 16 mm of rain.. Winnipeg's wettest Halloween on record). Temperatures will be on the cold side of normal Tuesday, with afternoon highs only near freezing, and evening temperatures of  -2 to -4C. Winds will also be picking up by late afternoon, with brisk southeast winds of 20 to 40 km/h Halloween evening producing wind chills near -10. Bundle up if you're out with the kiddies!

On Wednesday, a clipper system will track through the Dakotas spreading snow across much of southern MB Wednesday into Wednesday night. At this point, it looks like a general 2 to 5 cm is likely with this system, including Winnipeg, with locally higher amounts of 5-10 cm possible in some areas. Below normal temperatures will persist through at least the first week of November behind this system.. a far different story than last year when Winnipeg and southern MB recorded its warmest November on record.

  1. It looks like the below normal pattern will persist through the entire first half of November. What a change from last year.

  2. My goodness, I don’t even think we will make it to freezing today. Quite cold for this early.

  3. Light snow expected to begin in Winnipeg around 6-7 am Wednesday morning and persist much of the day into the evening. Should be a steady light snow through the day with 2-5 cm possible by evening in Winnipeg mainly on grassy surfaces. Temperatures will get up to +1C in the afternoon so there should be some melting on roadways. But things will likely get slick again Wed evening/night as temps drop below freezing and all that wet snow freezes up.

    1. So is this not going be the snow that stays for the winter? I wish it would stay... at least this is better than last years awful November. It was way too warm.

What’s the system on the weekend looking like?

    2. The snow we get tomorrow may indeed start our winter base.. as our temperatures stay below freezing the rest of the week. It all depends on how much we get tomorrow, but it should be enough to coat the ground and hide the grass.

As for the weekend system.. there's the potential for a good 5-10 cm of snow for us, although there are hints that warmer air may mix in and change the snow to rain for a bit Saturday which would cut down snowfall amounts for us. So still not a lot of confidence on amounts, but certainly a system that bears watching.

After that system pushes through, it looks pretty cold for the second week of November, so any snow we get will likely stick around for the rest of the winter. Too early for me.. I much preferred last November.

    3. Yeah we weren't getting conditions like this until the end of November last year!

    4. Rob! You know that I love this type of weather that’s coming! I hated last November, I predict we will see a top 30 cold November this year!

Why had t the snow started yet?

  4. Light snow has just begun in Winnipeg as of 830 am, a little later than expected, but not by much. Light snow should continue through the day into this evening, with amounts of 2-3 cm possible mainly on grassy surfaces. Roads should just be wet today but watch for slick conditions this evening/tonight as temps drop below freezing and we lose daylight.

    1. Yep it’s snowing right now, so is it true about 5cm will fall but only 2-3cm will accumulate?

Rob, just how cold are we looking into mid November? Next week looks like highs in the -8C to -5C range and lows in the -10C to -15C range. There’s no end in sight to the cold is there? We are below freezing highs all the way to the end of the extended 14 day trend, NAEFS lathering us in blue. Is this going to be a very winter like November?

    2. Most likely. First half of November looking below normal for us, and it's really tough to turn November around once you start off cold. Of the top 20 coldest first halfs of November in Winnipeg since 1872, ALL finished below normal for the month with an average temperature of around -9.5C (about 4.5C below normal for November) Not really surprising given the first half of November is the mildest on average, and if you get snowcover early, it's much harder for mild temperatures to surface the rest of the month. Bottom line: no repeat of last year, that's for sure!

    3. Radar not looking terribly impressive and models have been backing off on amounts for today, at least for Winnipeg. Heavier amounts possible to our south. Maybe only 1-2 cm for Winnipeg today with up to 5 cm towards US border.

    4. Yeah I’m really disappointed with the snow today, seems we always get ripped off.

Based on the forecasted temperatures for the first half of November, would that put us in the top 20 coldest Rob?

Is it true that the highs next week may be in the mid minus single digits with lows in the mid minus teens?

Is there any end to the cold in sight or will this continue for the foreseeable future?

If we don’t get a snowcover today we will end up being warmer won’t we? We really neeeeed that snowcover

  5. Models trending colder with Saturday's system so it looks like it will be all snow Saturday into Saturday night. A good 5-10 cm possible by Sunday morning, followed by well below normal temps next week. Like it or not, this system looks like it will be putting down our winter snow base.. no more grass after this weekend. That's a good 3 weeks earlier than last year (Nov 28)

    1. Yay! I like this!

Rob, how long does the below normal conditions go on for? NAEFS pastes us as well below normal right through mid month

    2. Judging by the way things are shaping up, and with early snowcover likely over much of the Prairies, I would say we're looking at below normal temps much of November. At this point, there's no indication of any pattern shift to above normal temperatures in the foreseeable future.

    3. Thanks rob. You know I am very happy with this! Could we be going for one of the coldest on record this year?

    4. Don’t you want this winter to challenge 2013/14 rob!! I sure hope so. It’s starting earlier and colder than that year

    2. Snowfall reports from yesterday:

      Miami ...... 9 cm
      Baldur ..... 8 cm
      Morden ..... 5 cm
      Winkler .... 5 cm
      Holland .... 5 cm
      Neepawa .... 3 cm
      Brandon .... 2.5 cm
      Portage LP.. 2 cm
      Morris .... 0.8 cm
      Steinbach.. 0.8 cm
      Winnipeg... 0.4 cm

Bulk of accumulating snow was over southern and western RRV where 5-10 cm fell. Amounts dropped off sharply from Morris north with just a dusting in Winnipeg.

    3. That’s super disappointing.. 0.4cm, what a ripoff.

What are we looking at this Saturday rob? Is it possible we can get 10cm? Please don’t say it will miss us again
